Depending on which card you choose and the offer you receive, you may be able to earn as many as 125,000 bonus SkyMiles.

Below, we break down how the current offers stack up and what to think about before you submit an application.

Who can get Delta American Express cards?

American Express has several rules that can affect eligibility before you apply. In general, Amex usually allows only one welcome bonus per card for a lifetime, so it often makes sense to apply when a card is offering a stronger limited-time bonus, as most of these cards are now.

You may also be ineligible for a welcome bonus on a personal Delta Amex card if you currently have or have previously had a higher-tier Delta Amex card. For instance, if you have or once had the Delta Reserve Amex, you may not qualify for the welcome offers on the Delta Blue, Delta Gold or Delta Platinum.

Delta’s business Amex cards are not affected by this same family restriction.

Amex may also look at other factors, including your income, credit score and past relationship with the issuer. Fortunately, you will usually see whether you qualify for a welcome offer before you accept the card.

Delta personal cards

Delta’s personal card lineup includes four options. The best fit depends on how often you fly Delta and how much annual fee you’re willing to pay.

Here’s what sets each Delta SkyMiles personal card apart.

Delta SkyMiles Reserve

Best for: Delta loyalists or travelers who want Sky Club access, subject to restrictions

The Delta SkyMiles Reserve is built for devoted Delta customers and frequent flyers.

Current welcome offer: See whether you’re eligible for as many as 125,000 bonus miles after spending $5,000 on purchases during the first six months of card membership. Welcome offers can vary, and you may not qualify for an offer.

Based on TPG’s valuations, that bonus is worth up to $1,500.

If you can get the full 125,000 miles, this is a strong time to apply. It matches the card’s highest mileage bonus on record and requires $1,000 less spending than the previous 125,000-mile offer with the lowest spending threshold.

THE POINTS GUY

Annual fee: $650

Key benefits: Delta’s premium consumer card includes a broad set of perks. For frequent Delta flyers who value Sky Club access, the card can potentially offset its annual fee through lounge entry, earning boosts and other benefits.

With this card, you’ll earn 3 miles per dollar on Delta purchases made directly with the airline. You’ll also get several Delta-related perks, including:

  • Complimentary upgrade eligibility for non-Medallions and priority boarding
  • An annual companion certificate when you renew, good for round-trip first class, Comfort or Main Cabin travel within the U.S. (including Alaska and Hawaii) and select other destinations. Delta Basic fares are not eligible.
  • Complimentary entry to American Express Centurion Lounges when you fly a same-day Delta itinerary and purchase the ticket with the card
  • Delta Sky Club access, plus four one-time guest passes each year; you receive 15 visits annually, or unlimited visits after spending $75,000 or more between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 of a calendar year
  • Earn 1 Medallion Qualification Dollar per $10 spent, plus 2,500 MQDs at the start of each Medallion qualification year
  • Two free checked bags, with the first bag free worldwide and the second bag free on U.S. domestic Delta flights
  • 15% off award redemptions on Delta flights for eligible cardmembers when taxes and fees are paid with this card and the booking is made through delta.com or the Fly Delta app

For more details, see the full review of the Delta SkyMiles Reserve.

Delta SkyMiles Platinum

Best for: Frequent Delta flyers

If you fly Delta often but do not want to pay the higher fee for the Reserve card, the Delta SkyMiles Platinum is worth a look.

Current welcome offer: See whether you’re eligible for as many as 90,000 bonus miles after spending $3,000 on purchases during the first six months of card membership. Welcome offers can vary, and you may not qualify for an offer.

Using TPG’s valuations, this bonus is worth up to $1,080.

If you can get the full 90,000 miles, it is a solid offer for $3,000 in spending. We have seen larger mileage bonuses or statement-credit offers in the past, but those required more spending.

THE POINTS GUY

Annual fee: $350

Key benefits: This card can work well for travelers who fly Delta regularly and want to earn miles while also working toward elite status. Even if status is not your goal, the companion certificate alone can justify the fee for many cardholders.

With this card, you’ll earn 3 miles per dollar on Delta purchases made directly with the airline.

Additional perks include:

  • An annual companion certificate upon renewal for Main Cabin round-trip travel within the U.S. (including Alaska and Hawaii), plus Mexico and select other destinations. Delta Basic fares are excluded.
  • 1 MQD for every $20 spent on the card, plus a 2,500 MQD Headstart at the beginning of each Medallion qualification year
  • Priority boarding
  • Two free checked bags, with the first bag free worldwide and the second on U.S. domestic Delta flights
  • 15% off Delta award redemptions for eligible cardmembers when taxes and fees are paid with this card and the trip is booked through delta.com or the Fly Delta app

For more details, see the full review of the Delta SkyMiles Platinum.

Delta SkyMiles Gold

Best for: Occasional Delta flyers or travelers testing out a Delta card

If you want a welcome bonus but don’t fly Delta very often, the Delta SkyMiles Gold is a strong candidate.

Current welcome offer: See whether you’re eligible for as many as 80,000 bonus miles after spending $2,000 on purchases during the first six months of card membership. Welcome offers can vary, and you may not qualify for an offer.

TPG values that bonus at up to $960.

If you can earn the full 80,000 miles, this is a good time to apply. Still, we have seen offers as high as 90,000 miles, as well as versions that paired up to 80,000 miles with a statement credit.

THE POINTS GUY

Annual fee: $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $150

Key benefits: This card is well suited to occasional Delta flyers who want a few extra travel perks.

With this card, you’ll earn 2 miles per dollar on Delta purchases made directly with the airline.

Other benefits include:

  • Two free checked bags, with the first bag free worldwide and the second on U.S. domestic Delta flights
  • Priority boarding
  • A $200 Delta flight credit each year after spending $10,000 in a calendar year
  • 20% inflight savings on food and beverage purchases, issued as a statement credit
  • 15% off Delta award redemptions for eligible cardmembers when taxes and fees are paid with this card and the booking is made through delta.com or the Fly Delta app

For more details, see the full review of the Delta SkyMiles Gold.

Delta SkyMiles Blue

Best for: Infrequent Delta flyers

If you want a basic card to start earning SkyMiles and you do not fly Delta often, the Delta SkyMiles Blue may be the right fit.

Current welcome offer: Earn 10,000 bonus miles after spending $1,000 on purchases during the first six months of card membership.

At TPG’s valuations, those miles are worth $120. The SkyMiles Blue generally does not get an elevated offer, so it makes sense to apply whenever you are ready.

Delta Blue Amex card art
THE POINTS GUY

Annual fee: $0

Key benefits: Because it has no annual fee, this card offers fewer perks than the others, but it still includes a few useful benefits.

With this card, you’ll earn 2 miles per dollar on Delta purchases made directly with the airline.

Other benefits include:

  • Pay with Miles, which lets you reduce the cost of a Delta flight by up to $50 for every 5,000 miles redeemed when booking on delta.com
  • 20% inflight savings on food and beverage purchases, delivered as a statement credit

For more details, see the full review of the Delta SkyMiles Blue.

Delta business cards

If you own a small business or have side income that comes with business spending, one of these cards could be a useful addition to your wallet.

Delta SkyMiles Reserve Business

Best for: Business owners who fly Delta often and want lounge access

As Delta’s priciest business card, the Delta SkyMiles Reserve Business comes with a strong set of benefits for loyal Delta travelers.

Current welcome offer: See whether you’re eligible for as many as 125,000 bonus miles after spending $15,000 on purchases during the first six months of card membership. Welcome offers can vary, and you may not qualify for an offer.

Using TPG’s valuations, this bonus is worth up to $1,500.

If you qualify for the full 125,000 miles, this is above our usual benchmark. The highest offer we have seen was 200,000 miles after $20,000 in spending, compared with $15,000 for this offer.

  • Complimentary access to American Express Centurion Lounges when you fly on a same-day Delta flight and buy the ticket with the card; up to two guests may enter for a fee of $50 each
  • Delta Sky Club access, with 15 visits per year and unlimited visits after spending $75,000 or more between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 of a calendar year

Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business

Best for: Business owners who fly frequently with Delta

Business owners looking for a strong mid-tier airline card should consider the Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business for its earning power and benefits.

Current welcome offer: See whether you’re eligible for as many as 100,000 bonus miles after spending $10,000 on purchases during the first six months of card membership. Welcome offers can vary, and you may not qualify for an offer.

According to TPG’s valuations, the offer is worth up to $1,200.

The full 100,000-mile bonus matches the best mileage offer we have seen, although earlier versions delivered that bonus after just $8,000 in spending. If you already have $10,000 in eligible business expenses lined up and want the card now, this is a strong deal. If your timing is flexible, it may be worth waiting for the same bonus with a lower spending requirement.

Delta SkyMiles Gold Business

Best for: Business owners who fly with Delta only occasionally

The Delta SkyMiles Gold Business is a good fit for smaller businesses or owners who are not especially loyal to Delta.

Current welcome offer: See whether you’re eligible for as many as 85,000 bonus miles after spending $6,000 on purchases during the first six months of card membership. Welcome offers can vary, and you may not qualify for an offer.

Based on TPG’s valuations, that bonus is worth up to $1,020.

If you can get the full 85,000 miles, this is a good time to apply. It is only 5,000 miles short of the best offer we have seen, and that previous offer also required $6,000 in spending. If the card already makes sense for your business, we would take the full offer.

Which Delta card should you choose?

With so many Delta cards available, deciding which offer is best for you can be tricky. The biggest bonus may be tempting, but it is also smart to think about long-term value.

When to Apply for Delta American Express Cards Based on Offer Trends

Fortunately, many of these cards can be a good match depending on your travel patterns. In short:

  • Reserve: Loyal Delta flyers who want lounge access
  • Platinum: Regular Delta flyers
  • Gold: Occasional Delta flyers
  • Blue: Infrequent Delta flyers

Bottom line

Delta and American Express offer a wide range of cobranded cards for travelers who fly only now and then or are deeply loyal to the airline.

Keep in mind that American Express generally limits welcome bonuses to once per card per lifetime. If you have had a specific Delta Amex before, or in some cases a higher-tier personal Delta card, you may not qualify for that card’s welcome offer.

Because welcome offers change, it is worth checking the bonus you’re offered and making sure you can meet the spending requirement with expenses you were already planning to make.
