When to Expect Your First Social Security Payment With the 2027 COLA

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2027. For the more than 76 million people who depend on Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), the first question is when the larger payment will actually show up in their bank account.

The timing varies depending on the type of benefit you receive and your usual payment schedule. Here’s how to find out when to expect the higher amount and how to verify the exact figure before you adjust your retirement budget.

When the COLA begins

The higher benefit amount applies to December 2026 Social Security benefits that are paid in January 2027. In other words, most retirees and other Social Security recipients will see the increase in their regular January payment. SSI works differently, though: because January 1 is a federal holiday, January SSI payments are issued on December 31, 2026, and will include the COLA increase.

You can check the SSA payment calendar or log in to your my Social Security account to see when the updated amount is due. The online notice showing your COLA-adjusted figures is available in late November.

How the usual payment schedule works

If you began receiving Social Security benefits after May 1997, the SSA pays you on a Wednesday based on your date of birth. People born on the 1st through the 10th are paid on the second Wednesday of the month. Those born on the 11th through the 20th are paid on the third Wednesday, and those born on the 21st through the 31st are paid on the fourth Wednesday.

In January 2027, the Wednesday payment dates are:

  • January 13, 2027: second Wednesday for birthdays on the 1st through the 10th
  • January 20, 2027: third Wednesday for birthdays on the 11th through the 20th
  • January 27, 2027: fourth Wednesday for birthdays on the 21st through the 31st

Your first Social Security payment of the year will include the 3.6% COLA on the date that matches your birthday group.

Exceptions and special situations

Some recipients do not follow the Wednesday schedule. If you started receiving Social Security before May 1997, or if you receive both SSI and Social Security, your Social Security payment date is the 3rd of each month. When the 3rd falls on a weekend or federal holiday, payment is made on the previous business day. In January 2027, the 3rd falls on a Sunday, so this group will be paid on December 31, 2026.

SSI beneficiaries normally receive their payments on the 2nd of the month, but because January 1 is a holiday, those payments will also be sent on December 31, 2026.

Direct deposit and Direct Express timing can also affect when the money appears. The SSA sends payments on the scheduled date, but banks may post them the same day, while some debit card providers and financial institutions may post them later in the week. If your deposit does not appear when expected, the SSA advises waiting three banking days before contacting the agency, and checking with your bank or card issuer first.

How to prepare and confirm your new amount

In late November, sign in to your my Social Security account and open your COLA notice. It will show your new gross benefit for 2027, along with any deductions such as Medicare Part B and, if applicable, Part D or an income-related monthly adjustment amount (IRMAA). Those deductions determine the net amount you will actually receive.

If you have changed banks, confirm your direct deposit information now to avoid a delayed or returned payment. You can update your deposit details online in your account or by contacting the SSA directly.

Once your January payment arrives, compare it with the notice. For example, a retiree whose 2026 gross benefit was $2,000 would see a new gross amount of $2,072 after the 3.6% COLA, before deductions. If the deposit seems lower than expected, review the Medicare deduction lines in your notice, since many retirees have premiums withheld directly from their Social Security benefit.

What to do if the payment is late or seems incorrect

If the scheduled date passes and the money is not in your account, first contact your bank or card provider to see whether the deposit is pending. If it still has not arrived, wait three banking days, then contact the SSA. The agency and the Treasury Department can trace the payment and reissue it if necessary.

If the amount is different from what you expected, review your COLA notice for any premium or withholding changes. For most people, Medicare Part B premiums and any IRMAA are the main reasons a net deposit is lower than the gross amount shown in your my Social Security account.

The bottom line

The 2027 COLA will be reflected in your January 2027 Social Security payment according to your regular schedule. For people who started receiving benefits after May 1997, that means the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of the month based on birthday. For those who began receiving benefits before May 1997 or who also receive SSI, payment comes on the 3rd of the month. SSI-only recipients will receive January payments on December 31, 2026, because of the January 1 holiday.

Check your my Social Security account in late November for your official notice and new gross amount. It is also a good time to make sure your direct deposit details are up to date. Knowing both the timing and the exact amount can help you adjust automatic payments and retirement plans without surprises.
