Kelly Clarkson kept her weight-loss eating plan refreshingly straightforward while using a GLP-1 medication to help her journey. In a People interview, the singer said she ate “a healthy mix” and credited her progress to finally following her doctor’s advice. She added that protein-heavy meals suit her well and that she has found the approach easy to maintain.
For Clarkson, a Texas native who enjoys meat, a high-protein diet was a practical fit. Nutrition experts have long pointed to protein as a helpful tool for weight management because it digests more slowly than carbohydrates, helping people feel full for longer and reducing the chance of overeating. One study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that people who got 30% of their daily calories from protein ate fewer calories overall and felt more satisfied. Protein can also support lean muscle, which helps the body burn more calories, and may reduce belly fat by making people less likely to overdo refined carbohydrates.
Balance also played a role in Clarkson’s routine. She said she still allows room for some of her favorite foods, which fits with research showing that completely banning certain foods can make cravings stronger. Rather than treating favorite foods as forbidden, a more flexible approach can make it easier to manage cravings over time.
Kelly Clarkson handles cravings in a healthy way
A review published in Current Nutrition Reports examined several studies and found that most showed deprivation can intensify the desire for the very foods people are trying to avoid. Experts say labeling foods as totally off-limits often makes them more tempting. Even if those foods are not kept at home, people still encounter them elsewhere, and repeatedly refusing them can become mentally draining. That cycle can eventually lead to overeating, followed by guilt and shame.
Instead of strict restriction, experts recommend acknowledging cravings and fitting them into an overall balanced eating pattern. That approach may also help ease “food noise” and improve a person’s relationship with food. Clarkson has used that mindset for years. In a previous appearance on Today, she said she had lost 37 pounds without making major changes to her diet.
Rather than giving up the foods she liked, she made ingredient swaps to make them more nutritious, such as using tapioca or cassava flour and hormone-free chicken in her fried chicken recipe instead of standard versions. She noted that the substitutions were more expensive, but she was pleased that they improved her health.
