TDCI shares consumer guidance ahead of ACA open enrollment

Digilifetrends Published 2 min read

The Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance is urging consumers who plan to buy or change individual health coverage through the Federally Facilitated Marketplace for 2027 to pay attention to the open enrollment window.

The department said Tennesseans using the marketplace under the Affordable Care Act should start reviewing their options and making plans early so they do not miss important deadlines.

After the open enrollment period ends, people generally can sign up for a health plan only if they experience a qualifying life event.

Enrollment dates are outlined below:

  • Open enrollment begins on Nov. 1, 2026, when consumers can first enroll in, renew, or change FFM plans.
  • Dec. 15, 2026, is the final day to enroll in or change plans for coverage that begins Jan. 1, 2027.
  • Open enrollment ends on Jan. 15, 2027, which is the last chance to enroll in or change Marketplace plans for coverage starting Feb. 1, 2027.

Consumers can visit Healthcare.gov to look for ACA-compliant products in the individual and small-group markets across Tennessee’s eight rating areas.

According to the press release, TDCI performs a comprehensive rate review with contracted actuaries to make sure rates are actuarially justified and are not excessive, inadequate, or unfairly discriminatory under state law.

During open enrollment, Tennesseans can call 1-800-318-2596 or go to healthcare.gov for help with enrollment and to estimate available tax credits.

Before choosing a plan, TDCI recommends that consumers keep several points in mind:

  • Compare plans carefully while shopping on the FFM during open enrollment.
  • Ask questions and reach out to carriers about their plans.
  • Review premiums, deductibles, copays, and other cost-sharing details, along with each insurer’s network of preferred or accessible providers and hospitals.
  • Contact providers directly to confirm they are in-network with the selected health plan.

The federal government also offers educational resources at healthcare.gov.

Consumers may also seek help from trained navigators who provide free, unbiased enrollment advice.

In addition, consumers can speak with a properly licensed insurance agent, and those with specific questions about rate increases can contact Consumer Insurance Services at 615-741-2218.
