- Strawberries and blueberries are both strong choices for a weight-loss snack.
- Each provides fiber and antioxidants that are linked to better metabolic health.
- For a more filling snack, pair either berry with protein and healthy fats.
When you’re trying to lose weight, choosing snacks can feel tricky. Pick something that doesn’t keep you full, and you may be hungry again long before your next meal. But the right snack can help manage hunger and support your goals without making you feel deprived.
Fruit is a simple snack to grab, and berries stand out for good reason. They’re sweet, colorful and require very little prep. But if you’re choosing between strawberries and blueberries, is one the better option for weight loss? We asked dietitians to compare their nutrition and see whether one comes out on top.
How Strawberries Can Support Weight Loss
If you want a generous serving of fruit for relatively few calories, strawberries are tough to beat. “Strawberries are naturally low in calories and high in fiber, a winning combination for weight loss,” says Melissa Mitri, M.S., RD. One cup of sliced strawberries has about 53 calories and 3 grams of fiber, making them a nutrient-dense choice that fits easily into a weight-loss eating pattern.
Fiber helps promote fullness by slowing digestion, which can help you feel satisfied after eating. Strawberries also have a high water content, so a cup gives you a sizable portion for very few calories. Their natural sweetness is another advantage. “They are also naturally sweet, especially when in season, which may help them serve as a lower-calorie snack to replace higher-calorie sweets and desserts,” Mitri says.
Strawberries also provide 108% of the Daily Value for vitamin C per cup, along with anthocyanins and ellagic acid, two antioxidants that have been shown to support metabolic health, says Lainey Younkin, M.S., RD.
“While you can certainly enjoy strawberries alone, pairing them with protein and some fat, such as Greek yogurt or mixed nuts, will provide a more balanced snack that will keep you full longer,” Younkin recommends.
How Blueberries Can Support Weight Loss
Blueberries are another smart choice when you want a snack that supports weight management. They provide fiber, vitamins and beneficial plant compounds in a convenient, naturally sweet package.
“Blueberries are another great weight loss–friendly snack rich in fiber and beneficial plant compounds,” says Mitri. “While blueberries are higher in calories (84 calories per cup) than strawberries, they pack slightly more fiber (3.5 grams).” A cup of blueberries has about 30 more calories than a cup of strawberries, but that difference is very small in the context of an overall eating pattern.
Blueberries are also a good source of antioxidants, thanks to their high anthocyanin content. These plant compounds give blueberries their deep blue-purple color and have been studied for their potential role in metabolic health. Some research has linked an anthocyanin-rich diet with a lower risk of obesity.
Which Is Better for Weight Loss?
“When comparing strawberries and blueberries, there’s no clear winner for weight loss,” says Younkin. Nutritionally, they are very similar: Both berries provide about the same amount of fiber and antioxidants that may support metabolic health. Strawberries are slightly lower in calories, but the difference is small and unlikely to make a meaningful impact on weight loss by itself.
What matters more is making fruits and vegetables a regular part of your eating pattern. Research consistently shows that eating a variety of fruits and vegetables is associated with better health outcomes, including healthy weight management over time. Eating a wider range of produce also helps you get more nutrients that support overall health. So feel free to enjoy both.
“To optimize your snack for weight loss, pair berries with protein and a little fat, like Greek yogurt or nuts, to keep you full longer and keep blood sugar steady,” Younkin recommends.
Other Snacks to Support Weight Management

- Yogurt with berries and chia seeds
- Apple slices with peanut butter

- Edamame
- Veggies and hummus
- Air-popped popcorn
- Hard-boiled eggs with cherry tomatoes
- Pistachios

Our Expert Take
Strawberries and blueberries are both excellent snack choices when you’re trying to lose weight. Strawberries are a bit lower in calories and rich in vitamin C, while blueberries provide slightly more fiber and are especially high in anthocyanins, plant compounds that have been studied for their possible role in metabolic health.
Neither berry is a “fat-burning” food, but both can help you feel full while staying in a calorie deficit. Choose the one you enjoy most, or better yet, enjoy both. Pairing either berry with a source of protein and some healthy fat can make your snack more satisfying.
