Chrissy Metz says she is comfortable using a GLP-1 medication — and talking about it openly.
The This Is Us star, 45, has long discussed her weight journey publicly, and it was even woven into the story line of the ABC drama.
After spending years trying a range of methods to lose weight, she said she eventually decided to try a weight loss drug and felt it gave her a new sense of freedom.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Chrissy said one of the biggest health benefits she has noticed has been being able to move around onstage, something she did during her Broadway run in &Juliet, which involved eight performances a week.
She added that the medication helped reduce inflammation. “You know, I’m perimenopausal, I have knee issues. There are things going on,” she said.
She also said the change has helped mentally. “I think also the mental capacity to have other things to think about than obsessing over the food noise and all that, that’s been super helpful,” she said.
Chrissy, who will appear in the upcoming AppleTV crime drama Nocturne alongside Stephen Graham, Liev Schreiber, and Zazie Beetz, previously told People that her decision to use Ro came after many other attempts to manage her weight.
“I’m in perimenopause, and there were obesity issues within my family and with my father, and I felt like I’ve tried so many modalities, whether it was diets or therapy, and none of it really worked for me,” she said.
She described the experience as “great,” adding that she has appreciated benefits she never expected after feeling skeptical at first.
“I was like, ‘I’m not taking this medication. I don’t wanna do this. It’s not gonna work for me.’ You know, all the things,” she recalled. “But when I realized food noise was really a thing, that consumed a lot of my head space, I was like, ‘Oh.’”
She said it has been refreshing not to spend so much time thinking about food. “It’s so nice not to be obsessing about what I’m going to have every minute, even as I’m still consuming the meal,” she said. “I just vilified food for so long because I was taught that it was bad, and you shouldn’t eat this or that.”
Chrissy also addressed possible criticism, saying that people tend to be judgmental no matter what. In her view, some will judge her for not taking a GLP-1, while others will judge her for using one.
“I always say, they’re not in my life. They’re not in my doctor’s notes. They’re not in the hereditary issues my family has. My life is my life, and I have to do what’s best for me, and that includes not listening to the comments and just talking to people who are positive and kind. I can’t engage with something that doesn’t make me feel good,” she said.
