Getting Ready for the Appointment
You can raise the topic of weight loss with your doctor during an annual wellness visit. Dupee says patients should be direct and suggests opening the conversation with a clear statement such as:
“I’ve been thinking about losing weight because I’m worried my current weight could be affecting my health and mobility. I want to approach this safely and avoid losing muscle. Do you think weight loss is something I should pursue? If so, what would be the safest way for me? I’d also like to understand whether medication makes sense or whether I should begin with nutrition and exercise.”
Before your appointment, take a moment to think through your reasons and goals for wanting to lose weight:
- Do you want better control of a health issue such as high blood pressure?
- Do you want to move more easily or stay more active?
- Do you want to sleep better?
- Do you simply want to wear smaller clothes again?
If you have tried losing weight before, it can also help to consider what worked and what did not. Binns says that this kind of reflection can lead to a more useful conversation with your doctor.
