In the complaint, Mastercraft is accused of using misleading door-to-door sales tactics to persuade homeowners to sign paperwork for what was presented as a free home inspection.

DELAWARE - Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings is pursuing action against a home improvement company she says misled homeowners.

The Delaware Department of Justice's Consumer Protection Unit has submitted an administrative complaint against Mastercraft Contracting LLC and its principals, alleging violations of several state consumer protection laws.

According to the filing, Mastercraft used deceptive door-to-door sales pitches to tell homeowners they had to sign documents in order to get a free home inspection. The paperwork, however, was allegedly a binding contract that carried steep cancellation penalties.

The state says the company then threatened homeowners with liens on their property and lawsuits to force compliance, even in cases where little or no work had been done. The complaint also says Mastercraft improperly displayed the Better Business Bureau logo and claimed accreditation even though it was not accredited by the organization.

“Delaware families deserve honesty when they’re seeking home repairs – not deceptive tactics that turn a moment of need into an opportunity for exploitation,” Attorney General Kathy Jennings said. “Contractors shouldn’t turn that vulnerability into a sales trap, weaponize fine print, or bully Delawareans with frivolous lawsuits. Our office will continue to take action against companies that prey on homeowners.”

The state is asking for civil penalties, restitution for affected homeowners, and orders barring Mastercraft and its principals from continuing the alleged conduct. The allegations have not yet led to a final finding of liability.
