What if owning a United credit card could be the difference between spending 295,000 miles or just 72,000 miles on the same international business-class flight?
That is not a hypothetical. It was a real award booking a friend of mine recently tried to make.
And although United credit cards are offering welcome bonuses of up to 100,000 miles, there is another perk that may be even more valuable over time: access to expanded saver award space and much lower award prices for eligible cardholders.
On certain flights, the savings can amount to hundreds of thousands of miles per ticket.
Here is how the benefit works — and why a United credit card can matter so much when it is time to redeem miles.
How cardholders can save huge amounts of miles on flights
A friend of mine was looking for business-class award seats from Geneva Airport (GVA) to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) for a trip coming up soon. He knew United cardholders could see lower prices, but he did not have a United card, so he asked me to compare the options before deciding whether to apply.
Without a card, he was seeing business-class pricing of 295,000 United miles per person, plus taxes and fees, for the one-way trip from Geneva to Newark. That adds up quickly for a family.
With a card, I checked the same flights and found a much lower price.
For the identical business-class seats, my price was only 68,000 miles per person, plus taxes and fees.
That is 77% fewer miles for the same lie-flat seat on the same aircraft.
I also have United elite status in addition to a United credit card, which lowers my award price a bit more. Even without elite status, a traveler with an eligible United credit card could book that same flight for 72,000 miles, saving 223,000 miles on a single one-way ticket.
The reason the gap is so large is that the savings are not limited to a simple 10% cardholder discount. Eligible United cardholders can also gain access to expanded saver award availability, which can unlock much lower prices on selected flights.
And this is not limited to one route or one date.
I also searched for business-class award space from my home airport, George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Houston, to Sydney Airport (SYD) and quickly found a flight priced at 400,000 miles for someone without a United card.
The cardmember-only price was just 85,000 miles, plus taxes and fees. That is a savings of 315,000 miles — or nearly 79% — on a single award ticket. For a family, the difference becomes even more striking.
Eligible United cardholders can save at least 10% on award flights
While some United award flights offer eye-popping savings like those examples, not every itinerary will show a discount that dramatic.
Still, eligible United cardholders always save at least 10% on qualifying United-operated award flights. If you also have United elite status, that savings rises to at least 15%.
For another real-world comparison, my family flies several times a year between George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Houston and Orlando International Airport (MCO).
On one search, one-way flights were priced at either 15,000 or 21,000 United miles depending on the itinerary.
With my United card, those prices dropped to 12,700 miles instead of 15,000 miles, or 17,800 miles instead of 21,000 miles.
Those savings are not as dramatic as the first example, but for a family of four booking round-trip travel at those rates, the total could still be roughly 18,000 to 26,000 miles, depending on the flights chosen.
Even no-annual-fee United cards can unlock the benefit
One of the best parts of this perk is that you do not need a premium United card with a large annual fee to get the award savings.
You can also get the $0 annual fee United Gateway℠ Card (see rates and fees) and enjoy the same savings.
If you have the United MileagePlus® Debit Rewards card or the $0 annual fee United credit card, you must spend $10,000 in eligible purchases in a calendar year to unlock the award discount.
For travelers who can meet that spending threshold with purchases they would make anyway, the Gateway card can provide a way to access lower award pricing without paying an annual fee.
Another option is the United℠ Explorer Card (see rates and fees), which has a $0 introductory annual fee for the first year and then $150 annually. Eligible Explorer cardholders can access the award discounts without meeting the Gateway card's $10,000 spending requirement.

Bottom line
United credit cards can offer more than bonus miles and travel perks. For eligible cardholders, access to expanded saver award space and discounts on qualifying award flights can lead to major savings when redeeming MileagePlus miles.
The ability to save airline miles with a co-branded airline credit card is not unique to United, since several airlines offer this kind of perk. Even so, the mileage discounts available through many cards and airlines are often limited to about 15%.
As the Geneva-Newark and Houston-Sydney examples show, the difference can sometimes reach hundreds of thousands of miles on a single ticket. Savings vary by flight, though, and not every cardholder will automatically qualify for these benefits.
Being able to fly in a lie-flat seat around the world for roughly 70,000 to 85,000 miles instead of 300,000 to 400,000 miles, simply by holding a credit card, is the kind of advantage that can make award travel more accessible to many more people.
For travelers who frequently redeem United miles, these award-booking benefits may be among the strongest reasons to carry an eligible United card.
