Smart Money Happy Hour hosts George Kamel and Rachel Cruze recently highlighted several of the worst purchases that can quickly drain cash and leave people in difficult financial circumstances.
A single item on this list may not cause financial trouble on its own, but the costs can pile up fast. In addition, most of these expenses are not one-time purchases.
Here are the eight biggest money drains they discussed in a recent episode.
1. Unneeded Subscriptions and Fitness Gear
The duo began with unnecessary subscriptions and fitness-related products. During the pandemic, Peloton bikes surged in popularity, and home gym equipment also became more common.
Those purchases are not very useful if they sit unused. There are also practical alternatives, such as going for a run rather than buying an expensive stationary bike.
2. Self-Care and Beauty Products
Kamel and Cruze both use self-care and beauty products, but they keep those purchases budget-friendly. Luxury brands often promise dramatic results, even when the real differences are modest.
Choosing lesser-known brands instead of big-name labels can help you cut costs while still getting similar or even identical care.
3. Private Colleges
As tuition rises and the job market becomes more difficult, it is harder to justify the cost of private college. Community colleges and in-state public schools are more affordable choices that still lead to a degree.
College can help open doors to new jobs whether you attend a lower-cost state school or a private university that leaves you with more than $100,000 in student debt.
4. Food Delivery Apps
Food delivery apps add steep markups to many orders. They are convenient, but repeated deliveries can become expensive over time.
The costs are even higher when ordering restaurant meals instead of groceries. Restaurant food already costs more than groceries, and a larger order means a larger delivery markup. Picking up groceries yourself can save a significant amount of money.
5. Long-Term Storage Units
Storage units can be helpful during a move when you need temporary space before everything is settled. A long-term storage unit is a different story. These units are often used to hold items people do not need or use, while costing more than $100 a month.
It is better to go through the contents and decide what should be donated or discarded. If you ignore it, this expense can become a major budget item for years.
6. Fast Fashion
Some people buy trendy clothes and then leave them in the closet after the trend fades. Fast fashion items also tend not to last as long as more ordinary clothing. Durable clothes are usually a better buy than something cheaply made that is popular right now.
7. Lifted Vehicles
Lifted vehicles are standard trucks, SUVs and Jeeps that have been modified to ride higher. Those upgrades are expensive, and Kamel and Cruze view them as a poor financial decision driven more by insecurity or the desire to appear more masculine than by real usefulness.
8. Lottery Tickets
Lottery tickets may seem harmless because they give people something to dream about for a few days, but Kamel and Cruze were blunt about them. The odds of winning are extremely low, making them a waste of money.
They can also become the starting point for gambling problems that damage both finances and everyday life. Lottery play can lead to casinos, sports betting and other risky habits that drain money and create debt.
