Texas Comptroller Don Huffines is encouraging residents to search for unclaimed funds as the state rolls out artificial intelligence and new software designed to speed up the claims process.
More than $12.5 billion in unclaimed property is still waiting to be returned to its rightful owners in Texas.
The Comptroller's Office says it has handled more than 107,000 claims since Aug. 1, a 40% increase from the same period a year earlier.
Unclaimed property can include forgotten bank accounts, uncashed checks, utility deposits, insurance payments, unpaid wages and the contents of abandoned safe-deposit boxes.
“This money belongs to the people who earned it, not the state,” Huffines said in a news release. “Texans should not have to wait for money that is already theirs. For the first time in decades, we are cleaning out the garage, and this is just the start.”
According to Huffines' office, more details about the modernization effort will be announced in the coming weeks.
Property held by the state can usually be claimed at any time.
