FTC and states sue Dollar General over alleged price overcharges

The Federal Trade Commission said it has teamed up with 20 states in a lawsuit against Dollar General Corp. over alleged deceptive pricing practices.

According to the FTC, the retailer repeatedly charged shoppers more at checkout than the prices shown on shelf labels, product tags and advertisements.

The lawsuit says Dollar General received more than 29,000 complaints between January 2023 and March 2026 from customers who claimed stores did not honor advertised prices. The agency says the company failed to adequately fix the issue despite repeated complaints and enforcement efforts.

“Dollar General has betrayed the trust of millions of American consumers and imposed significant financial harm on communities and consumers who are already struggling to make their paychecks last,” said Christopher Mufarrige, director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection.

The FTC and the participating states are seeking monetary relief, including restitution for affected customers, civil penalties and the return of profits allegedly gained through unlawful conduct. They are also asking a federal court to bar Dollar General from engaging in deceptive pricing practices.

Dollar General has not publicly commented on the lawsuit.
