District residents who are having trouble keeping up with student loan payments or want to know whether they may be eligible for forgiveness can get free, one-on-one help through the District’s Office of the Student Loan Ombudsman (OSLO).
The office works with borrowers to better understand repayment choices and identify programs that may reduce monthly bills or provide a path to loan forgiveness.
Services Available
Residents can receive complimentary counseling to:
Learn about student loan repayment options.
Find ways to lower monthly payments.
Check whether they qualify for loan forgiveness programs.
Address problems with student loan servicers.
Understand borrower rights and responsibilities.
Some Nonprofit Workers May Be Eligible
Workers at eligible government agencies and nonprofit groups, including many 501(c)(3) arts organizations, may qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF).
Under the federal program, borrowers who meet the employment and other requirements may have their remaining Direct Loan balance forgiven after making 120 qualifying monthly payments.
To see whether an employer qualifies, workers can use the PSLF Employer Search Tool and enter their employer’s Employer Identification Number (EIN).
How to Access Help
People interested in reviewing repayment or forgiveness options can reach out to the DC Office of the Student Loan Ombudsman for guidance.
Additional Resources: The office also offers educational webinars and information on student loan assistance.
Loan forgiveness is not guaranteed, and eligibility depends on the program. Residents are encouraged to review their options and use the District’s free counseling services before making decisions about their loans.
