After the launch of the Team Kentucky Medical Debt Relief Program, Governor Andy Beshear said the effort has continued to make progress toward eliminating $250 million in medical debt.
The program was created through an executive order signed by Beshear. In a recent Team Kentucky Update, he said the initiative has wiped out $153 million in medical debt for more than 67,000 Kentuckians.
Beshear said some of the people assisted by the program were dealing with bills tied to childbirth, parental debt or ambulance rides.
He also said medical debt forgiveness is especially important as many residents continue to face higher living costs.
About $97 million remains in the program’s debt relief effort, which Beshear said could help roughly 80,000 additional people. There is no application process, and individuals cannot request debt relief.
