As colder weather approaches, winter preparation is becoming a priority, and Atmos Energy has issued its 2026 Winter Warm-Up Check List to remind customers to get ready.
In a recent news release, the company encouraged customers to prepare for lower temperatures, especially with the holiday season bringing travel, shopping and time with family.
“As the calendars fill up, now is the time to remember that winter prep starts before the temperature drops,” the release said.
The Old Farmer’s Almanac has also released its 2026-27 Winter Weather Forecast, saying the Southeast is likely to see a milder, drier winter with above-normal temperatures.
The forecast says the coldest stretches are expected in mid-November, early and mid-December, early January and late February. Snowfall is expected to be normal, with the snowiest periods projected for early January and late February.
Atmos Energy said it prepares throughout the year by inspecting company-owned pipelines, equipment and facilities, while also moving forward with modernization and strengthening projects across its service area to support growth and increase capacity. The utility also develops its natural gas supply plan, builds winter storage inventory and confirms staffing and training needs for cold-weather work.
“All of this preparation keeps us prepared to safely deliver reliable natural gas service to our valued customers,” the company said.
Atmos Energy’s 2026 Winter Warm-Up Check List includes the following steps:
If your natural gas account has lapsed and service needs to be reconnected, contact Atmos Energy now to schedule an appointment before cold weather arrives. Customer service is available at (888) 286-6700 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday Central time, or visit the Account Center at any time.
Sign up in the Account Center under Notification Preferences to receive important text updates about your natural gas service.
Natural gas is about three times more affordable than electricity, but heavier use during extreme cold can raise bills. When temperatures drop, consider using energy-saving tips where safe to do so.
To make monthly costs more predictable, enroll in Budget Billing. This free plan provides a more consistent amount due each month, which can help with household budgeting.
Inspect your natural gas piping and appliances. You are responsible for any gas piping on your property from the meter to your home or business, and as the owner of that piping and equipment, you should arrange regular inspections and maintenance.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when operating and maintaining natural gas appliances to help keep your home safe and improve energy efficiency.
Make sure smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms are working properly.
Ensure snow and ice from the roof do not fall on or bury the gas meter.
More winter safety tips are available on the company’s website.
The release said Atmos Energy will closely monitor the weather and deploy the appropriate personnel across its system when forecasts call for extreme cold.
“We will communicate regularly with customers and communities before, during and after extreme weather events,” the release said. “After signing up for text alerts, follow us on Facebook, X, Instagram, and visit atmosenergy.com for more safety and weather preparedness information.”
Atmos also advises that anyone who suspects a natural gas leak should leave the area immediately and call 911 from a safe distance. Its 24-hour toll-free emergency number is (866) 322-8667.
