When Capital One introduced the Venture X Rewards Credit Card in late 2021, few expected it to become a real challenger to American Express and Chase in the premium card space. AmEx Platinum and Chase Sapphire Reserve already had the headline travel perks, strong loyalty partnerships, and devoted fans, while AmEx Centurion Lounges were redefining the airport lounge experience. Capital One, meanwhile, was better known for simple rewards cards and catchy commercials. But after investing heavily to break into the luxury segment, the company has made a strong entrance.
Capital One now offers some of the country’s most impressive airport lounges, a collection of luxury hotels on its booking platform that includes many top-tier properties, access to 500,000 vacation rentals through Capital One Travel, and an easy-to-use rewards structure that makes earning miles straightforward.
It has also done something its rivals have not: kept the Venture X annual fee at $395 even as AmEx Platinum and Sapphire Reserve have risen to $895 and $795. With a dedicated Capital One Travel app now part of the mix, the company is making an even stronger case for travelers to buy into its expanding ecosystem.
I have followed Capital One’s growth since Venture X launched and recently tested its newest technology on a trip to Greece. That experience gave me even more reason to keep Venture X at the front of my wallet and continue building loyalty with Capital One.
A premium travel card without the premium cost
For travelers who want high-end credit card benefits but are tired of annual fees that keep climbing, Venture X hits a sweet spot. The $395 fee has stayed the same since 2021, despite inflation. And unlike some competing premium cards, it does not depend on a maze of dining credits, subscriptions, and shopping perks to justify the price.
The card includes a $300 annual Capital One Travel credit and 10,000 anniversary miles, which are worth $100 when used toward eligible travel purchases. Use both and the annual fee is effectively covered. After that, lounge access, hotel benefits, travel protections, and easy everyday earning all become added value. The only catch is that the $300 credit must be used through Capital One Travel. For anyone who regularly books flights or hotels, that is not a difficult condition to meet.
There is also a strong sign-up incentive, as expected from a premium card. Capital One regularly offers generous welcome bonuses for new Venture X cardholders. At the time of writing, eligible applicants can earn 75,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 in the first three months. That is worth $750 toward eligible travel purchases, and potentially more if transferred to airline partners.
Airport lounges that stand out
I spend an unreasonable amount of time in airport lounges, and Capital One’s are among the few I genuinely look forward to using. American Express still has a major edge in the size of its Centurion Lounge network, and Chase has also made strong progress with its Sapphire Reserve Lounges. Even so, Capital One has become a serious competitor, and in some respects a leader, especially when it comes to food and design.
My favorite is the 13,500-square-foot lounge at New York’s JFK Airport, which opened in 2025. It feels less like an airport waiting area and more like a tribute to New York dining. There is a bagel counter serving hand-rolled Ess-a-Bagels, coffee from Queens-based Bean & Bean, a Murray’s Cheese counter, and a large bar with an impressive wine list. Many dishes are made to order, including hot items delivered directly to your seat. It is also open 24 hours, which is rare in U.S. airports.
Capital One also has lounges in Dallas–Fort Worth, Denver, Washington Dulles, and Las Vegas, with Charlotte in the pipeline. Its two Capital One Landings, created with José Andrés Group, offer a different approach. At Washington Reagan National and New York LaGuardia, the focus is on restaurant-style dining, with freshly prepared tapas and table service instead of a standard buffet.
Venture X cardholders get complimentary access to Capital One Lounges and Landings, plus Priority Pass membership with access to more than 1,900 airport lounges and experiences worldwide.
Luxury hotels and a vast rental network
Capital One has also become a meaningful player in upscale accommodations. Its Premier Collection, introduced in 2023 to compete with AmEx Fine Hotels + Resorts, includes a range of luxury properties such as Raffles London at the OWO, COMO Parrot Cay, Six Senses Kyoto, and the Peninsula Beijing. The list is not as large as AmEx’s, which also guarantees 4 p.m. late checkout, but it features many excellent options.
Book an eligible Premier Collection hotel through Capital One Travel with Venture X and you can earn 10 points per dollar, along with daily breakfast for two, a $100 experience credit for charges such as food and beverage or spa services, complimentary Wi-Fi, room upgrades, early check-in, and late checkout when available. There is also the Lifestyle Collection, which offers upscale and boutique hotels with a $50 experience credit and possible upgrades.
One of Capital One’s biggest surprises is its expansion into vacation rentals. When it first moved into premium homes in 2023, the selection was about 2,000. Now Capital One Travel lists roughly 500,000 vacation rentals, including options within its Premier and Lifestyle Collections. That opens the door to far more than traditional luxury hotels, including beachfront villas, mountain hideaways, and multi-bedroom homes that work well for families or groups. Some premium properties include extra services and credits, and Venture X cardholders earn five miles per dollar on eligible vacation rental bookings.
A travel app that pulls everything together
Another travel app might sound unnecessary at first. Between airline apps, hotel apps, booking tools, and confirmation emails, most phones already hold plenty of trip management clutter. But the new standalone Capital One Travel app makes a strong case for one more download.
Available on iOS and Android, the app brings flights, hotels, rental cars, vacation rentals, activities, and miles into one place. Built on technology originally developed with Hopper and later brought in-house, it lets eligible cardholders book travel, manage reservations, and receive real-time flight alerts and gate updates.
In addition to flights and hotels, travelers can book 150,000 activities around the world, from food tours and cooking classes to sailing trips and outdoor adventures. The app also shows live capacity and estimated wait times at Capital One Lounges and Landings, with digital waitlists for eligible visitors.
In practical terms, it functions as a single hub for planning and booking travel. Once a trip begins, the interface shifts to highlight the most relevant details while keeping other information available through tabs and scrolling, such as future flights, car rentals, and activities.
Testing it all in Greece
The best way to understand a new card benefit is to use it in real life. I tried the Capital One Travel app on a trip to Greece, where I stayed at two One&Only resorts in Capital One’s Premier Collection: One&Only Keá Island, an all-villa retreat overlooking the Aegean Sea, and One&Only Aesthesis, a beachfront resort on the Athens Riviera. Both properties would belong on any luxury traveler’s list, regardless of credit card affiliation.
At both resorts, I received room upgrades, and the $100 Premier Collection credits went toward meals such as mezze, spanakopita, and fresh branzino paired with Greek wines at the on-site restaurants. Breakfast for two was included as well, which becomes especially valuable at high-end resorts where the first meal of the day can be very expensive. At these properties, breakfast was essentially a lavish brunch with bubbles.
The app also made it easier to keep everything organized. Instead of searching through emails for hotel confirmations, transportation details, and excursion information, I could find everything in one itinerary. One afternoon, for example, I had a five-hour private catamaran sail along the Athens Riviera, complete with swimming, snorkeling, lunch, and wine. The excursion details and digital ticket were available right alongside my other reservations inside the app.
None of this is groundbreaking on its own. Many companies can book a hotel, arrange an activity, or send flight alerts. What stood out was how well Capital One connected all of those pieces in one platform. According to its travel trends forecast, 81 percent of surveyed travelers said they would be interested in a one-stop travel planning and booking site. After my trip, that makes sense.
Still, it is worth doing the usual homework. Third-party bookings can make changes and cancellations more complicated. In those cases, you may need to go through Capital One Travel to reach the airline or hotel, and fees can be higher than booking directly. Hotel loyalty members should also check whether they will lose points or elite benefits. Airline miles are still generally earned through third-party platforms, but hotel earnings can vary when booking through a service like Capital One Travel that already provides elite-style perks. I will use the app again, though probably not for every trip.
Why Venture X works as an everyday card
One thing many travelers value almost as much as a strong lounge is a credit card that does not require a spreadsheet to optimize.
Venture X earns 2 points per dollar on all purchases, no matter the category. There are no rotating bonuses, no need to remember which card is best for groceries, dining, or gas, and no complicated spending strategy for routine purchases. It is simple, with a few lucrative exceptions: hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel earn 10 points per dollar, while eligible flights, vacation rentals, and activities earn 5.
The miles are also highly flexible. They can be transferred to participating airline and hotel loyalty programs, often at a 1:1 ratio, which can unlock international business- and first-class awards that may be worth far more than a penny per mile. If award space is limited or cash fares are low, miles can also be used to erase eligible travel purchases at a rate of one cent each, including flights, hotels, activities, and other qualifying expenses booked outside Capital One Travel.
Should Capital One be your main travel card?
Five years ago, Capital One was the underdog in premium travel credit cards. Now it is a genuine contender, with a travel ecosystem that goes far beyond earning and redeeming miles for flights. Venture X brings together lounges, hotels, vacation rentals, activities, and the technology to manage it all, while keeping the cost of entry relatively reasonable.
That is what makes the card worth a look, even for people who have long stayed loyal to AmEx or Chase. After watching the company’s transformation and testing the newest additions myself, I am no longer asking whether Capital One belongs among premium travel heavyweights. It does. The real question is whether Venture X deserves to be the first card in your wallet. In mine, it is.
