Walmart adds an in-store item-finding light to its digital shelf labels

Walmart shoppers can now use the retailer’s app to trigger a flashing light that makes it easier to find items on store shelves.

Jars of spices including sage and thyme are displayed with electronic shelf labels showing prices and QR codes.

The feature is part of Walmart’s broader rollout of digital price tags across its U.S. stores, and it had already been available to employees and Spark delivery drivers for several months.

Using the Walmart app and its AI shopping assistant, Sparky, customers can search for a specific product and then tap a button on the item’s listing page to turn on a small green light in the aisle where they are standing.

Business Insider observed the technology during a store tour, and a Spark driver said it helped her complete delivery orders more quickly.

Walmart says store employees also use the lights to restock shelves faster and with greater accuracy.

The light feature has drawn less attention than the larger debate over whether the small digital displays could be used to change prices more dynamically.

CEO John Furner has said the company will not set prices based on the time of day or on who is shopping, and that Walmart will not use “personalized price” strategies.

Walmart also says its headquarters sets all maximum display prices centrally, while store managers can still choose certain discounts to stay competitive in their local markets.
