The cards above are among the strongest options for trip cancellation and trip interruption protection. Even so, many other travel credit cards include some level of coverage, though the limits are often lower.

What are trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance benefits?

Trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance may reimburse prepaid, nonrefundable travel costs if you have to cancel or change a trip for a covered reason. The amount of coverage, eligible expenses and qualifying events depend on the card.

In general, trip cancellation insurance applies before departure, while trip interruption insurance applies after a trip has already started and must be cut short.

Unlike standalone travel insurance that may offer optional “cancel for any reason” coverage, credit card benefits usually apply only to the covered circumstances listed in the card’s guide to benefits. Common covered reasons include illness, injury or severe weather, although exclusions still apply.

Because card benefits can change, always check the guide to benefits before booking travel.

Chase trip cancellation and interruption insurance

Chase cards provide some of the most robust trip cancellation and interruption benefits among major issuers.

The and the each offer coverage of up to $10,000 per covered person and $20,000 per trip. Despite annual fees of $95 and $795, respectively, both cards deliver top-tier protection limits.

The , United's top personal card and the best fit for frequent United flyers, also includes coverage of up to $10,000 per covered person and $20,000 per trip, according to the card's Guide to Benefits.

You and your immediate family members may qualify for coverage when you pay for all or part of your trip with an eligible Chase card or redeem rewards tied to that account, including through Chase Travel℠.

Other Chase cards come with lower limits. For instance, the (see rates and fees), the (see rates and fees) and the (see rates and fees) generally provide up to $5,000 per covered person and $10,000 per trip.

Cards such as the (see rates and fees), the (see rates and fees) and the (see rates and fees) also include trip cancellation and interruption insurance, but their limits are lower. These benefits usually reimburse only nonrefundable common carrier fares and have much smaller per-person caps than the Sapphire cards.

Important limitation

Coverage generally applies only to the part of the trip charged to your eligible card, or booked with connected rewards.

For example, if you pay for a nonrefundable hotel stay with gift cards but charge your flight to your Chase card, you likely would not be reimbursed for the hotel if you cancel, even if the flight was covered.

Always review your card’s guide to benefits for the full terms, conditions and exclusions.

American Express trip cancellation and interruption insurance

Select American Express cards also include trip cancellation and trip interruption protection. Each benefit can cover up to $10,000 per covered trip, with a separate maximum of $20,000 per eligible card in any 12 consecutive months.

Unlike many issuers, qualifying American Express cards may cover traveling companions as well as immediate family members. A traveling companion is someone who has made advance plans to travel with you or your family members for all or part of a covered trip.

To be eligible, you must charge the full cost of round-trip common carrier transportation to an eligible Amex card, or use a mix of the card and Membership Rewards points, vouchers or loyalty program certificates.

Benefit guides for eligible cards are available on Amex’s website.

Who qualifies for trip cancellation and interruption coverage?

Eligibility differs widely from card to card. For example, premium Chase cards cover the cardholder and immediate family members when the cardholder pays for all or part of a trip with the card account or rewards tied to that account.

By contrast, eligible American Express cards cover the cardholder, family members and traveling companions. The guide to benefits for eligible Amex cards defines a traveling companion as “an individual who has made advanced arrangements with you or your Family Members to travel together for all or part of a Covered Trip.”

Because the definitions of “family member” and “traveling companion” vary, and benefits can change, it is important to confirm eligibility in the guide to benefits before booking.

How do I file a trip cancellation or trip interruption claim?

  1. Contact your issuer: Call your card’s benefits administrator or begin a claim online. Even if the guide to benefits suggests you are covered, it is smart to call the number on the back of your card. That can help you confirm coverage, learn filing deadlines and find out which documents you need.
  2. Submit on time: Deadlines for notice and documentation vary. Chase generally requires you to open a claim within 20 days of the cancellation or interruption and submit supporting documents within 90 days, or as soon as reasonably possible. Amex generally requires notice within 60 days of the covered loss and written proof of loss within 180 days, subject to exceptions listed in its benefits guide.
  3. Provide evidence: After you start the claim, a benefits administrator will explain the next steps. Supporting paperwork such as receipts, doctor’s notes and weather advisories can help strengthen your claim, along with any other documentation that verifies the loss.

A benefits administrator can usually guide you through the claim process. Many card issuers also let you file online, which may save you from having to call and mail physical paperwork.

Does card insurance cover natural disasters?

In many cases, trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance can cover nonrefundable expenses if a natural disaster forces you to cancel your trip or leave early. Still, card policies differ, so check the benefits guide for any exclusions.

Keep in mind that the trip must be booked before the natural disaster begins for coverage to apply. If a storm or hurricane has already been named and you book afterward, coverage likely will not apply.

Bottom line

Trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance can be one of the most valuable, yet most overlooked, perks on a travel credit card.

Coverage varies widely by issuer and by card, so reviewing your guide to benefits before booking is essential.

For costly trips, stand-alone travel insurance may still make sense, but the right credit card can offer meaningful protection without an added premium.
