Getting enough sleep can feel out of reach for many people, but tea may offer some help when it comes to winding down.
“There are a variety of teas that can help with insomnia and anxiety,” New York-based internist Dr. Frank Contacessa told The Daily Meal in an email. “Chamomile, valerian root, and lemon balm can have calming effects and even relax the muscles.”
One study of postpartum women published in the Journal of Advanced Nursing found that drinking chamomile tea daily for two weeks was linked to short-term sleep benefits. A separate 2010 study also highlighted chamomile’s many health benefits, including its use in treating insomnia.
Before sipping tea at bedtime, make sure it is caffeine-free. Herbal teas are generally caffeine-free, so those blends are usually the safest choice.
If you are looking for a recommendation, one of the best-known options is Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime. It includes calming herbs such as valerian, spearmint, and chamomile. Bigelow Sweet Dreams Herbal Tea is another solid pick, with similar ingredients and a touch of rose blossoms for a more soothing evening flavor.
Tea is not the only drink that may help you relax before bed. There are several other beverages that could help you sleep more soundly.
