This article explains a recent change to how American Express handles Membership Rewards points. In the past, if you had several cards that earned Membership Rewards, Amex would automatically pool the points into one account. That is no longer the case. Now, points stay in the card account where they were earned, so each balance appears separately instead of being centralized.
How To Combine Your American Express Membership Rewards Points
P2 recently received the Amex Gold Card, and the updated functionality appeared in the account right away.
After a new account is added, the option to connect accounts becomes available. Here is the process.
Step 1:
From the homepage, scroll to the section displaying your American Express Membership Rewards points. There, you will see separate balances for different accounts. Click manage connections in the bottom right corner.
Step 2:
Next, choose the accounts and balances you want to combine.
Step 3:
Finally, review and accept the terms and conditions, then select connect accounts.
The Pundit’s Mantra
After step 3, you will be prompted to answer a security question. Once that is completed, the process is finished.
Keep in mind that this feature links your points to a specific card account. For example, if Card A has 50,000 points and Card B has 20,000 points, and you plan to close Card B, you should first move those 20,000 points to Card A. If you do not, you could lose the points tied to Card B.
