Some Social Security recipients will receive what appears to be an extra payment this month, though it is really just an early SSI deposit. Supplemental Security Income is a Social Security program that sends monthly benefits to older adults, people with disabilities, and disabled children.
Millions of people receive benefits each month, with payment amounts tied to age or medical condition, income, and limited financial resources. This month, however, the schedule looks a little different.
Because of a calendar quirk, recipients will see two payments in October.
The second payment is actually next month’s SSI check. Since the first day of November falls on a Sunday, beneficiaries should get their November payment on Friday, Oct. 30.
This is not extra money, and it happens regularly. The Social Security Administration does not issue payments on weekends, and SSI checks are always scheduled for the first day of the month.
Because the first day of November falls on a Sunday, payments are released early, on Friday.
There will be one more early payment later in the year. Because Jan. 1 is a holiday, recipients will receive two checks in December.
The maximum monthly SSI benefit for 2026 is $994 for an individual and $1,491 for a couple.
To qualify for SSI, applicants must meet several requirements, according to the SSA. They must be U.S. citizens or nationals, or qualify as a noncitizen in one of certain immigration categories.
They must also be at least 65 years old, blind or disabled, and have limited income and limited resources. More details about income limits and eligibility are available on the Social Security website.
For people who receive Social Security retirement benefits, payments are spread across the month and sent on Wednesdays, based on the recipient’s birthday.
For example, people born from the 1st through the 10th receive checks on the second Wednesday of each month. Those born from the 11th through the 20th are paid on the third Wednesday, while birthdays from the 21st through the 31st are paid on the fourth Wednesday.
To receive Social Security retirement benefits, a person generally must be at least 62 years old and have earned 40 work credits, which equals about 10 years of work paying Social Security taxes. They must also be a U.S. citizen or a lawfully present noncitizen.
The maximum Social Security retirement benefit is $5,181, while the average monthly check is $2,086.
Here is the Social Security payment schedule for the rest of the year based on birthday:
