Social Security Checks of as Much as $5,181 Are Due This Week

The final round of Social Security payments for the month is set to be distributed this week, and some retired Americans may receive up to $5,181.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) sends retirement benefits on different dates each month, largely based on a beneficiary’s birth date and, in some cases, when they first began collecting benefits.

Beneficiaries born between the 21st and 31st of any month are generally scheduled to receive their payment during the fourth Wednesday of the month. People born between the 1st and 10th are usually paid on the second Wednesday, while those born between the 11th and 20th receive benefits on the third Wednesday.

Some recipients follow a separate schedule. That includes people who began receiving Social Security before May 1997, along with certain individuals who receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

How Much Could You Receive?

The logo of the US Social Security Administration is seen outside a Social Security building, November 5, 2020, in Burbank, California.

Payment amounts differ from person to person and depend on factors such as lifetime earnings and the age at which retirement benefits begin.

The SSA determines retirement benefits from a person’s earnings record, and higher earnings that were subject to Social Security taxes generally result in larger payments.

For someone who earned the maximum taxable amount every year starting at age 22 and begins collecting benefits in 2026, the SSA offers three examples:

  • Retiring at age 62: up to $2,969 per month.
  • Retiring at full retirement age: up to $4,152 per month.
  • Retiring at age 70: up to $5,181 per month.

So the $5,181 figure is not a standard benefit or a ceiling that applies to every retiree. It is an example for a high earner who waits until age 70 to claim benefits in 2026. The SSA says payments can be lower for people who earned less than the taxable maximum.

Social Security Benefits Set to Rise Next Year

Beneficiaries have also recently learned how much their payments will increase next year.

The SSA announced that Social Security and SSI benefits for about 76 million Americans will increase by 3.6 percent under the annual cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA.

The adjustment is tied to the rise in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers over the relevant measuring period.

For retired workers, the SSA estimates the average monthly benefit will climb from $2,095 to $2,170, or about $75 more each month. The estimated average benefit for an aged couple receiving payments will rise from $3,238 to $3,355, while the average for disabled workers is expected to increase from $1,642 to $1,701.

The COLA will take effect with Social Security payments received in January. SSI recipients will see the increase slightly earlier, with larger payments arriving at the end of December.

Beneficiaries do not need to submit an application to receive the increase. The adjustment happens automatically, and the SSA will notify recipients of their individual benefit amount.
