Cleaning baseboards has always felt like one of the most tedious household tasks to me. The narrow trim runs around the edge of my entire apartment, and because it’s bright white and present in every room, it seems to show dirt everywhere. Since I try to avoid crouching down to scrub it, I usually settle for a quick sweep with the edge of my broom or, more often, leave it alone entirely.

Still, with the holidays approaching, I knew I’d eventually have to deal with the job. That’s when I came across a surprisingly easy cleaning trick on TikTok that promised almost no effort at all.

A Surprisingly Clever Way to Clean Baseboards

When I saw the video from creator @jaroslavskiy0, I laughed at first. Then it hit me: the idea was actually pretty smart. The method is simple — wet a sock and slide your foot along the baseboards to wipe them clean.

I checked whether other people had tried it and was pleased to see that fellow Apartment Therapy writers had found it amusing and useful too. My own baseboards needed a serious cleaning, so I decided to test the trick for myself.

Trying the Sock Method

Rather than standing at the sink, I dampened the toe of a clean sock and put it on my left foot. I left the other sock dry so I could use it afterward to help dry the baseboards. I started in my bathroom, concentrating on the dusty spots that had built up embarrassingly fast. After the first pass, I was impressed by how quickly and smoothly it worked.

Most of the dust stuck to the sock, which meant I didn’t have to bend down and gather up piles of debris. In about a minute, I had cleaned the entire bathroom’s baseboards. As I moved from room to room, I simply took off the socks, shook out the dust into the trash, and put them back on to keep going. Once they dried, I tossed them into my laundry hamper.

Why This Hack Works So Well

Baseboards can get dusty again within a week or two, and if you don’t have the patience or energy to keep up with that constant chore, this sock trick is a perfectly practical option. It was easy on my back, required only something I already had at home, and took less time than using a mop, broom, or specialty cleaning tool. The soft cotton picks up dust well, and when the sock is damp, it holds onto it instead of letting it fall back off. If your baseboards are especially grimy, you can also add a small amount of gentle cleaning solution.

Even if your usual method works fine, this is still a handy trick to keep in mind when you need a quick fix — or when kids want to help out before a holiday gathering.
