As the temperatures turn colder, your HVAC system is about to become one of the busiest appliances in your home. Before it has to handle the extra demand of winter, this is an ideal time to make sure it is in good shape and ready for the season ahead.
Start with the basics: check the filters. A dirty or clogged filter can make it harder for air to flow through the system, forcing it to work harder than it should. Inspect filters regularly and replace them based on the manufacturer’s guidance. It is also important to make sure furniture, curtains, rugs and other items are not blocking supply or return vents.
If your home uses a heat pump, the outdoor unit should get some attention too. Leaves, branches and other debris can gather around it and limit airflow, so keep the surrounding area clear. Follow the manufacturer’s directions when cleaning it. For forced-air systems, ductwork is another key part of the equation. Leaks, gaps or disconnected sections can let heated air escape before it reaches the rooms that need it most. If certain rooms are difficult to keep comfortable or your energy bills seem unusually high, consider having an HVAC professional inspect the system.
A professional tune-up is also a smart move before colder weather arrives. A technician can examine the heating system, spot possible issues and confirm that it is running safely and efficiently. Routine maintenance may also help your equipment last longer.
To further manage energy use, pay attention to your thermostat settings. There is no need to heat an empty home. Lowering the temperature while you are asleep or away can help cut energy use. A programmable or smart thermostat can handle those changes automatically, making the process even easier.
