Intense rainfall can reveal drainage problems that may quietly endanger your home’s foundation. When roof runoff gathers near exterior walls, moisture can seep into basements, wash away supporting soil, or put pressure on the foundation itself. A brief inspection during and after a storm can show where water is heading, giving you a chance to fix minor issues before they turn into costly repairs.

Spot Areas Where Water Collects
After steady rain, walk around your home and look for puddles close to exterior walls. Focus on low spots under roof valleys, downspout outlets, and paved surfaces that angle toward the house. Wet soil, displaced mulch, and dirt stains on siding can also signal a drainage problem.
Inside the basement or crawl space, check for musty odors, damp corners, or light-colored mineral residue on masonry. These warning signs may show up before any obvious crack or leak appears. Effective foundation drainage starts with controlling roof runoff and keeping surface water moving away from the structure.
Rework the Soil Grade
Add compactable soil to low areas so the ground slopes away from the foundation. A common guideline is a drop of about 6 inches over the first 10 feet, although patios, property lines, and nearby structures may call for a different plan. Keep soil several inches below siding so moisture is not held against materials that need to stay dry.
When adjusting the grade, choose dense soil that keeps its shape. Loose mulch or gravel by itself may let water pass through and pool beside the wall. Proper grading around a foundation is important for reducing basement moisture problems.
Improve Roof Drainage
Inspect gutters during moderate rain from a safe spot on the ground. If water is spilling over the edge, the system may be clogged, pitched incorrectly, or unable to handle the roof’s runoff. Sagging sections and leaking joints can also send water too close to the foundation.
If repeated repairs do not solve the problem, replacement may be the better option. For homeowners in the Puget Sound area, seamless gutter installation by High Point Gutter is one possible choice when considering a new residential system. A professional can match gutters and downspouts to the roof size and place outlets where extensions can direct water to a proper discharge point.
Keep Downspout Extensions Working
Each downspout should release water far enough from the house for it to keep flowing downhill. Extensions can shift during yard work or come loose after storms, so check them often. If water is emptying beside the foundation, reconnect the extension and make sure the outlet is not blocked by leaves, soil, or mulch.
Point the outlet toward a lawn or approved drainage area, and do not send runoff onto a neighbor’s property or a walkway. A splash block can help limit erosion, but it still needs to rest on ground with the right slope. In the fall, inspect extensions whenever you clear roof debris, since small clogs often form at elbows and connection points.
Look for Early Signs of Structural Movement
Monitor new cracks rather than guessing how long they have existed. Mark the end of a small crack with a pencil, note the date nearby, and photograph it with a ruler for scale. Contact a qualified foundation professional if the crack widens, water gets through it, or doors and windows start sticking for no clear humidity-related reason.
Outside, watch for stair-step cracks in masonry, gaps around frames, and sections of soil pulling away from the foundation. These signs do not always mean major damage, but they deserve attention after extended rain. After the next storm, check the downspout outlets first. Standing water there can quickly reveal which drainage repair still needs attention.
