Once-famous ’80s names that everyone seemed to know

Ask anyone under 40 to identify these four people and the answer will probably be silence. Still, each of them was, for a real stretch of the 1980s, among the most recognizable figures in America.

Sally Field reportedly mouthed the winner’s name in disbelief

Pia Zadora won New Star of the Year at the Golden Globes for a movie that critics had already savaged, and Sally Field, sitting in the audience, allegedly turned to her seatmate and mouthed, “Pia Zadora?!” when the announcement was made. The explanation surfaced quickly: Zadora’s billionaire husband had spent weeks wooing Hollywood Foreign Press voters with private screenings. She spent the rest of the decade as an easy target for jokes and was later named the Worst New Star of the entire 1980s by the Razzies.

Rick Springfield’s breakthrough double act

Rick Springfield won a Grammy for “Jessie’s Girl” while also playing Dr. Noah Drake on General Hospital. At the same time, he was both a chart-topping rock star and a daytime soap idol, a combination music and television have rarely matched since.

An emergency surgery and Olympic gold were only weeks apart

Mary Lou Retton underwent knee surgery shortly before the Olympic Games and still arrived in Los Angeles ready to compete. She earned a perfect 10 on vault, became the first American woman to win the Olympic gymnastics all-around title, and soon afterward appeared on a Wheaties box as the cereal’s first female spokesperson. The entire turnaround took just a few weeks.

A record label sent a 15-year-old to the malls and got a hit

With no better plan, a record label put Tiffany on a road of free performances in shopping malls. The gamble paid off: her version of “I Think We’re Alone Now” climbed to number one, and for roughly a year afterward her face seemed to be everywhere on teenage bedroom walls.

The takeaway

None of these four needed a long-running franchise or an extended career peak to become unforgettable. A scandal, a split-screen career, an Olympic breakthrough, and a marketing stunt that worked were enough to make each of them instantly familiar to millions, at least for a while.
