Office Visit: How Health Coverage Can Bring Peace of Mind

Health insurance is more than a financial backstop; it is a key part of staying healthy. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says people who have coverage are more likely to have a regular source of care, use preventive services and get medical attention before an illness becomes more serious. Those without insurance are more apt to postpone care or avoid treatment because of cost, which can lead to worse health outcomes over time.

One of the biggest advantages of health insurance is access to preventive care. Many plans cover routine screenings, vaccinations and annual wellness visits with little or no out-of-pocket expense. These services can help identify problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers early, when treatment is often more effective and less costly. Preventive care can help people remain healthier, avoid complications and improve quality of life.

Coverage can also offer peace of mind. A sudden illness, hospital stay or injury can bring hefty medical bills, and insurance helps shield individuals and families from many of those costs while providing access to doctors, specialists, hospitals, medications and other essential services. For people living with chronic conditions, coverage can make ongoing care and prescriptions more affordable and easier to obtain.

For Oklahomans, this season is especially important because it lines up with annual enrollment periods. People on Medicare can review their coverage and make changes during Medicare Open Enrollment, which runs each year for a set period and takes effect at the start of the following year.

People under 65 who buy coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace also have an annual Open Enrollment window. Even if your current plan seems fine, it is wise to compare options each year. Provider networks, prescription drug coverage, premiums, deductibles and benefits can all change from one year to the next.

Taking the time to understand your health insurance benefits and review your coverage during open enrollment can help make sure you have the protection and access you need when healthcare needs arise.

Let’s make it a good month!
