Ampace already makes well-regarded home batteries, while Octopus Energy is preparing to launch its Nook range, announced before this partnership with CATL, in 2027.
  • Octopus Energy, Ampace, and CATL are joining forces
  • They say they want to reshape the smart home battery market
  • Next-generation technologies such as sodium-ion batteries are expected

Home energy products are having a major moment, from DIY solar setups to smart home batteries, and three of the industry’s biggest names are working together on the next wave of home energy storage.

Energy supplier Octopus Energy and battery makers CATL and Ampace have signed a memorandum of understanding to combine hardware engineering with software intelligence in pursuit of better battery systems.

Octopus will contribute its smart tariff, mobile app, and wider customer ecosystem platforms, while CATL and Ampace will provide battery chemistry and hardware expertise. The initial focus will be on European markets.

While no finished products have been announced yet, the partnership is expected to explore advanced technologies such as sodium-ion batteries, high-density cell designs, and longer battery lifespans, all aimed at reducing customer costs and cutting electricity bills.

Plans for what comes next

Octopus Energy has extensive experience with smart meters.

Greg Jackson, founder and chief executive of Octopus, said bringing the three companies together will transform home energy storage and create next-generation batteries in which hardware and software operate in close harmony.

Jason Zhu, president of Energy Storage Systems at Ampace, was similarly upbeat, saying the collaboration could reshape how energy is delivered and used as systems become smarter, more connected, and more accessible.

Until products and pricing are actually released, the claims remain to be proven, but Octopus Energy, CATL, and Ampace all have strong reputations, and the products from these companies have generally impressed.

The joint announcement also highlighted home batteries’ ability to charge during off-peak periods and send power back to the grid when demand is highest, which could deliver meaningful savings for customers.
