The state is now accepting applications for the regular Home Energy Assistance Program, which can provide up to $1,086 to low- and moderate-income households to help cover heating costs.
The aid may be used for fuel or for heating and cooling equipment. The exact benefit depends on factors such as income, household size, heating source and whether the household includes a vulnerable member. A family of five could earn as much as $7,948 a month and still qualify.
State officials said the benefit was raised this year to keep up with higher heating oil and kerosene prices. Assistance for heat using oil, kerosene or propane has increased by $90 to $990, while the amount for wood, pellets and coal has gone up by $65 to $700.
Applications are open for people who are not automatically enrolled through participation in other social benefit programs.
People can apply online, by mail or at social service departments. New York City residents may also apply through the Access HRA portal.
Officials are encouraging applicants to seek assistance quickly because benefits are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis and are available only until the funding is exhausted. Payments are made directly to vendors for the covered expenses.
