Even with a home warranty covering the appliance, one Nevada homeowner says replacing a burst water heater came with $1,250 in added charges.

What to know

The Clark County homeowner posted the estimate on Reddit after a warranty contractor listed additional costs that were not included in the coverage.

One commenter highlighted two items on the bill, saying, "Unless they are relocating the gas line or something, then 'Gas Line (Modification)' and 'Sediment Trap (Code Upgrade)' are two charges for the exact same thing."

The thread also questioned whether some of the separately billed work should already have been part of the installation price. Another commenter noted that judging the estimate fairly would require seeing the current setup and understanding the local situation.

Additional context

The homeowner objected to the expansion tank price, saying they were being charged $350 for a part that costs about $50. They said the tank had become a local code requirement in 2024, which could mean some of the proposed work was needed to meet regulations.

For homeowners weighing replacement choices, a heat pump water heater can also provide possible energy savings. Cala's customizable smart heat pump water heaters, for instance, are designed to heat water only when it is needed.

What are the options?

Commenters advised the homeowner to ask for a clear, plain-English breakdown of the charges and to get a second quote from a local plumbing company.

Another option raised in the discussion was hiring a plumber independently. One commenter suggested asking whether the warranty provider offered a cash-out choice that would make that possible.
