More Charming Than a Wreath: A Nostalgic '90s Halloween Idea for the Front Yard

Digilifetrends Updated 2026-10-01 3 min read

One of the clearest signs of a great Halloween in the 1990s was a plastic jack-o'-lantern bucket packed with candy. Although these orange pails with painted faces first appeared in the 1940s, they became especially popular in the '80s and '90s. Now, decades later, the classic trick-or-treat staple is having a moment again online. This time, though, fans of the look care less about the candy and more about the basket itself.

As decorators look for nostalgic touches that bring back the past, they're skipping more traditional Halloween decorations, such as garlands and spooky wreaths, and giving these old candy buckets a new purpose. Several examples can be found online. Tiktocker itsmaddiesuestutzman, for instance, turns them into charming tree lanterns with a retro feel. Others, including thenovicechef on Instagram, place them among decorative bare branches set inside a large urn, adding another unmistakable '90s detail.

If you still have a few of these plastic accessories stored away, brush off any spider webs — or use faux ones if you prefer the look — and prepare to make your own DIY Halloween display. Following Maddie's example, you can place LED lights inside the buckets and hang them from branches in your front yard. The concept is creative, though it may become a bit pricey if you no longer have the original buckets. Plastic pumpkin pails sell on Amazon for about $10 each, and you'll probably need several to cover a tree, along with enough lighting to make the jack-o'-lanterns glow after dark. Even if you don't remember seeing pumpkin-covered trees in your own '90s Halloween memories, the result still gives off a cheerful vintage feel.

This TikTok-inspired '90s Halloween project is a nostalgic seasonal craft and is fairly easy to put together. Start by cleaning the buckets with a multipurpose spray and letting them dry. Instead of candy, fill them with small LED lights, such as Candlium's LED tea lights, and tape them to the bottom of the bucket. Another option is iBaycon's LED battery-operated Halloween lights, which are designed for outdoor use and are waterproof. Depending on how thick the buckets are, you may need more than one strand to make them glow well. After that, fasten the pumpkins to a sturdy tree branch so they stay secure if the weather changes. If you want to replace the awkward plastic handles, drill holes through the bottom and thread Halloween-themed satin ribbon through them, tying the ends underneath the pumpkins to create handles in whatever length you prefer.

That is enough to impress trick-or-treaters. The best part of this '90s-style setup is that it can be customized however you like. Just keep the era's signature traits in mind, especially the orange-and-black color scheme and decorations that lean cute rather than scary. You can enhance the tree with more Halloween lights, like Maddie did, or add a Joyin wrap ghost decoration. Bats or ghosts can also be used to fill out the tree's branches. For a full '90s mood, play “This is Halloween” and “Enter Sandman” on repeat.
