Midland Again Ranks No. 1 Among America’s Best Retirement Cities

Retirement may feel distant for many millennials, but a recent ranking of the country’s top retirement destinations is worth a closer look.

At the top of the list is a city in Michigan.

Why Midland Keeps Beating Out Other Retirement Spots

For the second year in a row, U.S. News & World Report has placed Midland, Michigan, at No. 1 on its list of the 20 best cities to retire in the United States. So what puts Midland ahead of the rest?

The publication says Midland performs strongly in areas such as affordability, average commute times, and employment rates. It points out that the national average home value is $359,870, while Midland’s average home value is $206,176. As U.S. News & World Report notes:

Midland offers a lower cost of living than similarly sized metro areas when you compare housing costs to median household income.

Beyond the numbers, Midland’s appeal also comes from its atmosphere. Northwood University adds a college-town feel, while Dow Gardens and the Midland Center for the Arts bring a strong creative presence.

Then there is the well-known Tridge, a landmark that gives the city its own distinct identity. There have even been questions about whether it will be replaced soon.
