Maine (WABI) - Medicare open enrollment is now underway, and people enrolled in Medicare have until Dec. 7 to review their coverage for the coming year. Nearly 400,000 Mainers depend on Medicare.
Experts recommend checking plans even if people are happy with what they currently have. Premiums, out-of-pocket expenses, and covered benefits can all change from one year to the next.
Medicare Part D plans help cover prescription medications picked up at the pharmacy, and AARP says they can be complicated.
Leigh Purvis, prescription drug policy principal at the AARP Public Policy Institute, said enrollees may notice changes in several areas.
“You can see changes in your deductible. You can see changes in your premium. There’s also an increase in the maximum out-of-pocket spending cap, which is now $2,400, so there are a lot of different things for you to take a look at, but what’s most important is that plan covers the drugs you need at a cost you can afford,” Purvis said.
AARP can help answer questions about Medicare open enrollment. More information is available at aarp.org/medicare or medicare.gov.
