Mechanics Say These Car Battery Locations Are Among The Most Annoying

Digilifetrends Updated 2026-10-01 2 min read

In most vehicles, the battery is easy to find. Open the hood, look around the engine bay, and it usually stands out without much trouble. That setup leaves plenty of working room, which makes maintenance straightforward. But some models break from the usual layout, and when they do, getting to the battery can become a frustrating task, especially for mechanics.

TikTok user @mr.speedtec highlighted one especially awkward example while working on a 2017 Chevrolet Traverse, a vehicle known for more than just its battery layout. Instead of being under the hood, the battery was tucked behind the front passenger seat. Getting to it meant lifting the floor covering to expose a panel, which then had to be removed before the battery and related components could be reached. The cramped space made the job even more inconvenient.

Depending on who you ask, the 2017 Chevy Traverse may rank among the worst examples of battery placement in a vehicle. Still, it is not the only one that gives mechanics a hard time.

Other difficult battery locations

The 2017 Chevy Traverse is hardly alone in making battery work more difficult than it should be. The Dodge Journey, sold from 2009 through 2020, is another example. Its battery sits in the front driver-side fender well, which means the car has to be raised and the wheel removed before the plastic shielding in the wheel well can come off. Only then can the battery be accessed, and the tight space makes the work awkward.

The Chrysler Sebring uses a similarly inconvenient setup, with the battery also hidden behind the driver-side wheel and wheel-well lining. The Jeep Grand Cherokee adds another level of difficulty, with several 2010s and 2020s model years placing the battery under the passenger seat. As with the Traverse, a floor panel has to be removed to reach it, and even sliding the seat forward does not fully clear the area. Changing a battery usually requires only a few tools, but in some vehicles, the job takes a lot more effort than expected.
