A Maryland shopper thought a utility rebate made a high-efficiency heat pump water heater essentially free.
But after posting the deal on Reddit’s r/HeatPumps forum, other users warned that the purchase would not be fully covered.
What happened
In the Reddit post, the original poster said, "You can get a free heat pump water heater with Pepco energy rebate," and included a screenshot showing an $1,800, 50-gallon, super high-efficiency Rinnai model in their cart with an estimated total of $0.00.
The poster also said they "still had to pay sales tax on the original purchase price" and noted that the instant rebate was only available through Halloween.
תגובות from commenters were mostly negative. One person wrote, "Yay and now pay $5,000 for install." The original poster replied, "Install is free when you do it yourself."
Several others said they were jealous of the rebate. One user wrote, "Got excited then realized that says Pepco, not Peco." Another commented, "I don't know what Pepco is, but that must be nice."
The top reply said, "You should know: not everybody in this sub lives in Maryland."
What can be done
Pepco’s rebate period for heat pump water heaters has ended, but utilities and local governments often offer incentives for residents who upgrade to more efficient equipment.
