Keep Your Garage Warm in Cold Weather With a Space-Saving Heating System

Digilifetrends Published 4 min read

Keeping a garage comfortable in winter can be a challenge. Many garages are poorly insulated, if they are insulated at all, and the door tends to open and shut repeatedly as people come and go, letting heat escape fast. That means you need a heater that can recover quickly and still avoid taking up valuable floor space. The Heat Storm 6,000-watt garage heater, priced at $399.99, is built for that job without getting in the way.

Unlike a typical portable space heater, this model is designed to mount on a wall or ceiling. That matters because a 20,000-BTU unit sitting in the middle of the garage would be inconvenient and uncomfortable. The heater uses carbon fiber infrared heating elements and can warm areas from 1,000 to 1,800 square feet with a mix of radiant and convection heat. It includes a remote control, a remote thermostat so the temperature is measured where you actually feel it, and Wi-Fi support for use with a smart home app. It also has a strong reception history, with 4.5 stars from 42 ratings and a 100% recommendation rate from Home Depot buyers.

Those features make it a practical fit for a garage used as a workspace during cold weather, or for storing items that are sensitive to low temperatures. It should work well in both smaller garages, since it leaves the floor clear, and larger ones, because it is made to heat a sizable area.

The trade-offs of installing a high-wattage garage heater

Even though the Heat Storm heater is marketed as energy-efficient, it still draws a lot of power: between 3,000 and 6,000 watts. That kind of electrical load usually means your garage will need wiring beyond the standard setup, and installation may not be a simple do-it-yourself project. A 6,000-watt, 240-volt appliance needs its own circuit, a 30-amp breaker, and at least 10-gauge cable. It can be fitted with three- or four-prong 30-amp plugs, often the same style used for 240-volt appliances such as dryers, though Heat Storm recommends hardwiring the unit, which is generally easier and less expensive. Since many garages are unfinished or only partly finished, and breaker panels are often located there, the wiring may be somewhat easier to manage.

Connecting the heater itself is not much harder than wiring a dryer plug, but adding a breaker and running 10-gauge wire through a wall is neither the safest nor the easiest task. The rest of the setup is simpler, thanks to the included adjustable mounting bracket.

There are other choices, including even more powerful models. Home Depot sells electric garage heaters rated as high as 15,000 watts, which is likely more than most residential garages need. Propane heaters are also available in both tank-mounted and freestanding designs. Some people prefer propane, but it comes with drawbacks such as tank refills and safety concerns, so many homeowners choose the less troublesome infrared option and the set-it-and-forget-it approach.

What makes a smart heater smart?

People who prefer old-school tools and wood-fired stoves may not be impressed by the Heat Storm heater’s smart app features. Still, being able to adjust the temperature in advance from a distance is genuinely useful for a space that is not used on a fixed schedule. A Wi-Fi-connected smart heater can make that much easier.

The heater can be controlled through the SmartLife: Smart Living app, which is available for Android, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. The app appears to run on HeyTuya, part of Tuya’s SmartLife ecosystem, and it can also be connected directly to Home Assistant through Tuya integration. The free version offers basic controls, automations, and voice assistant support for Alexa and Google Assistant. Paid plans add features such as cloud storage, security camera-related functions, and various smart-home alerts. Other premium cloud and lighting plans are also available, though they are not directly related to the heater. Tuya and SmartLife are widely used platforms, but the app-based controls, including remote access from outside the home, depend on a cloud service that may not always be available. It is also worth noting that while the Android app has an overall rating of 4.6 stars, its recent reviews have been notably poor.
