Kitchen cabinets can collect grease over time from cooking oils, smoke, and dust. Regular cleaning helps prevent unpleasant odors, discoloration, and pests such as cockroaches. But certain degreasing products and techniques can strip paint or damage the cabinet finish, so it is important to use them carefully.
The safest way to degrease cabinets without harming the finish is to use a gentle cleaning solution instead of a harsh chemical degreaser. A simple option is to mix mild dish soap with warm water in a spray bottle. Before cleaning, dust the cabinets first so loose debris does not scratch the surface.
Once the dust is removed, spray the solution generously onto the cabinet surfaces and let it rest for a few minutes. Spray again, then wipe it away with a clean, soft cloth such as a microfiber cloth. Repeat as needed until grease, dirt, dust, and other residue are gone. Afterward, dry the cabinets immediately with a clean cloth to help prevent water damage and mold.
For best results, clean and degrease your cabinets every other week. Doing so also makes it easier to clean kitchen walls that may have grease on them. The longer grease remains on finished or painted wood, the more likely it is to cause damage.
How to tackle stubborn grease without harming cabinets
When grease stains are more stubborn, use the right tools so you do not remove paint or damage the finish. Skip abrasive cleaners and sharp objects. Instead, use a soft-bristled toothbrush or cleaning brush, a plastic pot scraper, or a non-abrasive sponge.
You can also make a paste with baking soda and water and apply it to the problem area. Do not combine baking soda with vinegar, since the two neutralize each other's cleaning power. Cover the spot with plastic wrap and leave it overnight, then remove the wrap and wipe away the paste with a clean, soft cloth. After that, spray the area with a mild cleaning solution and gently wipe it with a sponge, soft brush, or cloth.
To protect cabinet quality while cleaning, avoid using too much water, which can damage natural wood cabinets or strip the finish or laminate from other cabinet types. Do not use steel wool or other harsh tools that can scratch the surface. Strong chemical degreasers, furniture polish, and waxes should also be avoided, since they can damage paint or finish, leave stains, or cause discoloration. Never mix different cleaning products, as this can create dangerous fumes or a harmful chemical reaction that could damage your cabinets.
