If you're saving for a house, the holiday season can be hard to manage. Still, choosing meaningful gifts doesn't have to derail your savings goals. Bank of America says a few expert strategies can help you stay on track while still giving well during the busiest spending period of the year.

"For many aspiring homebuyers, the holiday season can be a balancing act between celebrating with loved ones and staying focused on longer-term financial goals," Matt Vernon, head of consumer lending at Bank of America, said in a press release. "The key is to make a plan for your money before the season gets busy. You don’t have to choose between thoughtful holiday gifting and saving for a home."

Below are four ways to stretch your budget without lowering the quality of your gifts.

1. Plan Your Home Search Early

Keeping your future home purchase front and center can make it easier to cut back on holiday spending. Bank of America suggests using the season to refocus on your homebuying goals by reviewing your finances and researching ways to save.

The company recommends starting with a clear look at your debt, savings, and monthly expenses so you have a realistic sense of what you can afford. When estimating the cost of buying a home, remember to factor in closing costs and moving expenses in addition to the down payment and monthly mortgage payment.

Another way to strengthen your savings is to set up automatic transfers into a savings account, according to Bank of America. You may also want to explore down payment assistance programs that can lower upfront costs; some require repayment later, while others provide grants that do not need to be paid back.

2. Focus on Gifts That Feel Personal

Bank of America says about half of Americans believe that the thought behind a gift matters most. That means gifts do not need to be expensive to feel meaningful. Sentimental items and do-it-yourself presents, such as a customized picture frame or homemade food gifts, can help you save money while still giving something special.

The bank also suggests themed gift exchanges that make budget-friendly presents feel more festive. A secondhand gift swap or clothing exchange can be a thoughtful option for friends and family, and trading crafts or holiday baked goods can be another fun way to celebrate.

3. Shop With a List in Hand

Write your holiday shopping list ahead of time so you can budget for each item in advance. Planning early also gives you time to compare prices across retailers and make use of seasonal discounts, helping you find the lowest price for every gift.

Unexpected promotions can be useful if they match something already on your list, but Bank of America warns against buying things you did not plan for. Last-minute markdowns and clearance items may be tempting, but they can still chip away at the money you are setting aside for a home.

4. Use Rewards and Memberships Wisely

Holiday gift planning should also include a review of your rewards accounts and store memberships. Bank of America says to choose a credit card that offers the best return on each purchase, such as a cash-back card. Your bank may also have shopping partner programs that offer extra savings at retailers you were already planning to use.

If you belong to a store loyalty program or have a related membership, be sure to include that in your plans. Combined with credit card rewards, these programs can help you stack discounts and save even more.
