One of the most effective ways to earn American AAdvantage Loyalty Points through credit card spending is easy to overlook, which is why it deserves a closer look. The rules around this have also recently been made official, rather than simply being an unofficial benefit that most cardmembers could rely on.

Under the AAdvantage Loyalty Points system, co-branded American credit cards generally earn one Loyalty Point for every dollar spent. But one card works differently, and it is by far the most rewarding option.
The Citi® / AAdvantage Business™ World Elite Mastercard® is the co-branded business card from Citi and American Airlines. It has an unusual feature tied to authorized user spending: instead of only crediting the primary cardmember, the card can also award Loyalty Points to the authorized user, which is not typical for a small business card.
Through December 31, 2028, both the primary cardmember and the authorized user earn Loyalty Points on authorized user purchases. In practice, that means the same spending can generate two sets of Loyalty Points, one in each account. Put simply:
- If an authorized user spends $100,000, both the primary cardmember and the authorized user would each receive 100,000 Loyalty Points.
- If the primary cardmember spends $100,000, only the primary cardmember would receive 100,000 Loyalty Points.
So the important point is that the spending must be made on the authorized user’s card in order to trigger this double earning across two accounts.
Beyond this feature, the Citi AAdvantage Business Card comes with a range of useful benefits and a strong welcome bonus, so it may be worth considering even aside from the Loyalty Points opportunity.
Why this Loyalty Points double dip is valuable
In my case, this is how I qualified for AAdvantage elite status. I had struggled to justify putting spending on American-branded cards when the return was only one Loyalty Point per dollar, especially compared with other cards available.
But when the same spending can help two people reach elite status and unlock Loyalty Point Rewards, the numbers become much more compelling:
- 125,000 Loyalty Points can earn Platinum Pro status for two people, along with oneworld Emerald benefits.
- 175,000 Loyalty Points can let each person choose from valuable Loyalty Point Rewards, including options such as two systemwide upgrades or up to 25,000 AAdvantage bonus miles.
- 200,000 Loyalty Points can earn Executive Platinum status for two people, the highest published elite tier.
- 250,000 Loyalty Points can let each person select two Loyalty Point Rewards, with choices including two systemwide upgrades or up to 30,000 bonus miles. That could mean as many as four systemwide upgrades or up to 60,000 bonus miles per person.
For instance, 250,000 Loyalty Points in each account could translate into a combined total of 12 systemwide upgrades or 170,000 bonus miles. That is a very significant return, beyond the miles earned from spending and the elite status itself.
Bottom line
The Citi AAdvantage Business Card offers a straightforward way to double dip Loyalty Points through authorized user spending. This benefit is available to cardmembers and is currently set to remain in place through December 31, 2028, with the possibility of being extended again. If you are working toward AAdvantage elite status, this is a particularly attractive strategy.
