How to Cut Cake into Even Pieces Using a Simple Strip Method

Aesthetically minded dessert lovers, this one is for you. Few things are more disappointing than spending time on a beautiful layer cake only to watch it fall apart when it is sliced. Clean layers can crumble, smear together, or end up in uneven pieces. Fortunately, there is a nontraditional cutting method that helps avoid that problem.

The idea comes from a short video shared by Williams-Sonoma. Instead of cutting a round layer cake into triangular wedges, the cake is sliced from the center outward into long rectangular strips. It may go against the usual way of cutting cake, but the payoff is neat, uniform servings.

To try it, use a long knife with a light serrated edge, and warming the blade slightly can help create cleaner slices. First, estimate the cake's center line and cut a thick strip through the middle. That separates the cake into two rough halves. Lift out the strip with a flat spatula, place it on a plate or cutting board, and cut it into individual square portions.

After that, bring the two remaining curved sections together so they form an almost complete circle again. Turn the cake so the split runs horizontally, then make another thick cut through the center. The number of servings will depend on the size of the cake, but the method produces neat square pieces, with the final four outer corners left as small wedge-shaped servings around the edge.

If you have a cake turntable, it can make the process even easier. A rotating stand is useful for decorating and also helps with cleaner slicing and a nicer presentation. There are also many other cake-cutting tricks that can help home bakers serve better-looking slices.
