Hidden rooms and concealed passageways have fascinated people for centuries, from ancient Egyptian tombs and Renaissance libraries to Prohibition-era speakeasies and famous sites such as the Winchester Mystery House. One of the best-known modern versions is the so-called murphy door, often designed to look like a bookcase.
Secret doors have also shown up in mystery fiction and pop culture for decades. They appear in places like the Batcave entrance in Adam West’s Batman (1966), and for anyone hoping to try one at home, the good news is that a bookcase door can be built without spending a fortune.
Compared with a more elaborate rotating wall, a traditional door-style opening with hinges on one side is far easier on the wallet. In fact, a sturdy murphy door can be put together for under $100 by reusing an existing interior door, filling hinge and strike-plate gaps with a large-hole wood filler, and installing center-pivot hinges with self-closing spring latches. Before building, measure carefully to be sure a simple DIY bookcase fits the opening, is light enough for the hinges, and can swing outward without colliding with anything in the hidden room. It may take time, but checking the measurements first is much easier than rebuilding later.
Building a secret bookcase door on a budget
@melvingregg Back on my DIY!! I’ve always been fascinated with hidden doors. Was running out of shelf space in my office so I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to try my hand at a hidden bookshelf door… #DIY #MurphyDoor

Having a bookcase that matches the frame is essential. Retailers may not carry the exact dimensions you need, so you may have to build your own using boards, plywood, a table saw, wood glue, and nails. After assembly, the bookshelf can be sanded and painted to suit the room, but the doorway itself matters too. A swinging murphy door works best in a level, square opening, so you may need to build a custom frame to keep everything plumb. Dado cuts can also help the pieces fit together more cleanly.
After filling any gaps left by the new frame, drill holes in the top and bottom of the secret bookcase door about one-third of the way in for the center pivot hinges on whichever side you want it to swing. You may also need to remove some material from the frame to ensure smooth opening and closing. Once the door is installed, you can style the bookcase so it blends into the room it is hiding.
Even with a limited budget, it is still possible to add the classic book-opening effect. You can buy an empty hardcover book case, or hollow out a real book, then attach a strong string to wooden pieces secured inside the case and thread that string through a hole in the back of the bookcase so it can release the hidden latch.
Other low-cost secret door ideas
A hinged bookcase door is likely the most practical budget option, but it is not the only one. A sliding hidden entrance is another possibility, although it can be harder to conceal because it needs to sit farther into the wall and typically requires about an inch of clearance above the floor. Historic secret doors in places such as England’s Warwick Castle also show that hidden entrances do not have to be bookcases. They can be concealed behind paintings, tapestries, or even false walls, like the servant spaces often seen in Victorian-style mansions and in films such as Ready or Not. As for what to put in the hidden room, the options are nearly endless as long as the space meets fire-safety rules.
Buying a pre-made or custom secret bookcase door can get expensive, ranging from a few thousand dollars to nearly $20,000 for a more armored, durable version. Still, if you do not want to source every material yourself, a basic murphy door hardware kit is available for about $150.
Whether you take inspiration from a library hidden children’s space or use the design to create a concealed pantry, a murphy door can make a strong impression without necessarily costing a fortune.
