Finding Relief While Living With Bronchiectasis

Digilifetrends Updated 2026-10-01 2 min read

(StatePoint) Bronchiectasis is a long-lasting lung disease that causes the airways to become widened and thickened because of inflammation and infection. Working with a lung specialist and following evidence-based treatment can help limit further lung damage and slow the course of the condition.

Breathing Easier When Living With Bronchiectasis

The American Lung Association, working with Boehringer Ingelheim, is helping raise awareness about bronchiectasis and encouraging people to speak up for themselves so they can get an early diagnosis and the right care plan.

Diagnosis is sometimes delayed because bronchiectasis symptoms can look like other respiratory conditions, including COPD and asthma. Donna L. experienced that firsthand. “As an adult, I began developing pneumonia almost every year. Eventually, it became two or three times a year. My doctors treated each infection as it came, but no one was looking for the underlying cause,” she said.

A family friend urged her to dig deeper. “He told me, ‘If you don’t find out what’s causing you to get sick over and over again, you could end up with permanent lung damage.’ That really stuck with me and pushed me to keep asking questions until I got answers.”

After a bronchiectasis diagnosis, it is important to see a pulmonologist, a lung specialist with experience treating the condition. This kind of specialist can help make sure the care plan addresses other respiratory illnesses or related health issues as well. They are also often the best source of information on newer treatment options, including a medication approved for some people living with bronchiectasis. In addition, working with a specialist can help ensure the treatment plan reflects a patient’s symptoms, goals and daily life.

“Initially, my pulmonologist advised me to use my nebulizer four times a day. At 66 years old, I still own and operate several businesses, and I found that schedule very difficult to maintain,” said Donna. By working closely with her pulmonologist, she developed a plan that fit her routine while still following recommended therapies to manage her condition effectively. Her doctor eventually recommended an airway clearance vest, which she says has made a major difference in helping her control symptoms and breathe more easily. “That recommendation completely changed my life.”

Sticking with the treatment plan created with a specialist can make a real difference. “When I stay consistent with my treatment plan, I breathe better, have more energy and can even laugh and carry on conversations without constantly struggling to catch my breath,” said Donna.

To improve symptoms, cut down on flare-ups and support quality of life, airway clearance, an individualized treatment plan and regular check-ins with a specialist are key.
