Current high-yield savings account rates: Up to 4.70%

Whether you are building an emergency reserve, setting aside money for a major purchase such as a dream getaway, preparing for a large investment in precious metals like gold and silver, or saving for retirement, keeping your cash in one of the best high-yield savings accounts can be a smart move.

Fortune, working with financial industry consultants at Curinos, offers a detailed look at the highest savings account rates available. Below is a rundown of HYSAs to help you choose the one that fits your needs.

Curinos has more than 30 years of experience in financial services data. Fortune's team reviews daily Curinos reports that track savings account and certificate of deposit rates across a wide range of financial institutions. That process results in a data-backed list designed to help savers find the accounts that offer the best value.

Average savings account rates have climbed from the lows seen in earlier years, but they are still well below the APYs offered by the most competitive high-yield savings accounts on this list.

There is no separate category of bank account officially called a “high-yield savings account.” Rather, the term refers to U.S. financial institutions that generally pay savings rates far above the industry average.

Banks that offer standard savings accounts with lower yields often operate large branch networks and provide a full range of deposit and lending products. By contrast, institutions offering high-yield savings accounts are often online banks with a much smaller lineup of products and no physical branches.

If you want to earn more interest on your savings and are comfortable managing the account online instead of visiting a branch, a high-yield savings account can turn what may seem like pennies into potentially hundreds of dollars a year, depending on your balance and APY.

Consider a hypothetical saver who leaves $5,000 untouched in an account for a year, assuming the APY stays the same throughout that period. Below are estimates for what that saver might earn in an account with a 5.00% APY versus one with a 0.40% APY:

As the example shows, moving money from a traditional savings account to a high-yield one is a simple change that can make a major difference in interest earned.

No matter what type of savings account you have, any interest you earn is generally taxable.

Will savings account rates go down?

They could, though nothing is guaranteed. Banks often adjust their rates when the Federal Reserve raises or lowers its benchmark federal funds rate. Recent Fed cuts have helped borrowers but could put pressure on savings APYs.

Can you lose money in a high-yield savings account?

Before opening an account, confirm that your savings will be insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation or the National Credit Union Administration. That protection should help guard against losing your principal. Savings account balances are also not exposed to market losses in the same way stocks are, though inflation can still erode purchasing power if it rises faster than your APY.

Is a high-yield savings account still worth it?

Yes. Even after rate cuts, many high-yield savings accounts still offer APYs above 4.00%. They remain one of the strongest options for earning interest while keeping your money easy to access. If you are willing to give up some liquidity in exchange for a locked-in return, a certificate of deposit may be worth considering.
