Chrissy Metz has spoken candidly about how GLP-1 medication has changed her life.
The actor, best known for her role in This Is Us, said she has dropped 100 pounds with the help of the medication, and that the effects have gone beyond weight loss.
Although GLP-1 drugs were first developed to treat diabetes, they can also reduce appetite by affecting how the body processes blood sugar and insulin, which may support weight loss when paired with diet and exercise.
Metz discussed the wider impact of the medication during a red carpet interview with Entertainment Tonight at the Nocturne premiere, describing it as “super helpful.”
“I think, honestly, being able to run around a stage eight shows a week was like really, really amazing,” she said while wearing a green velvet gown.
“I’m perimenopausal, I got knee issues, there’s things going on,” she added.
“Just the mental capacity to have other things to think about than obsessing about the food noise, that’s been super, super helpful. It’s been great.”
It is not the first time Metz has addressed her use of GLP-1 medication. She has also talked about continuing strength training while taking it.
In an Instagram Story post, she showed off her bicep and said: “You know, I love all my blips and blops and my flips and flops, but she’s making progress on the strength training journey.”
Metz added: “She’s making progress. We like progress. That’s my progress report.”
She has also told PEOPLE that she tried multiple approaches to losing weight before finding something that worked for her.
“I’m in perimenopause, and there were obesity issues within my family and with my father, and I felt like I’ve tried so many modalities, whether it was diets or therapy, and none of it really worked for me,” she said.
Metz also said the medication changed the way she relates to food.
“It’s so nice not to be obsessing about what I’m going to have every minute, even as I’m still consuming the meal,” she said. “I just vilified food for so long because I was taught that it was bad, and you shouldn’t eat this or that.”
She added that it has also helped with joint pain and inflammation.
“And it’s been helping me be more mobile and have less joint pain and inflammation, and run around onstage, and just do things that would have been much more difficult several pounds and inches ago,” she said.
When asked about possible criticism of her choice to use GLP-1 medication, Metz said other people will always have opinions, but that does not guide her decisions.
“It doesn’t matter, because like I always say, they’re not in my life. They’re not in my doctor’s notes. They’re not in the hereditary issues my family has. My life is my life, and I have to do what’s best for me,” she said.
