AT&T customers who submitted claims tied to two data incidents could receive money from a $177 million settlement after a federal judge granted final approval. The $5,000 figure applies only to certain claimants with documented losses; it is not the amount every approved claimant will receive. The agreement settles the lawsuits without AT&T admitting liability or wrongdoing.
The settlement covers two separate events. In one, AT&T said a data set with information on about 7.6 million current account holders and 65.4 million former customers was posted on the dark web. That information could include names, addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, account passcodes and, for some customers, Social Security numbers. A second incident involved call and text interaction records from an AT&T workspace stored on a third-party cloud platform.
For the first incident, claimants who chose the documented-loss option may seek as much as $5,000 for qualifying losses that can be backed up with records and linked to the breach. For the second incident, the documented-loss cap is $2,500. Those who selected tiered payments instead may receive much smaller amounts, with court estimates of roughly $39 to $40 for Tier 1 claims, $7.50 to $8.10 for Tier 2 and $6.50 to $7.10 for Tier 3. The final figures could shift as claims are completed.
When settlement checks could be sent
The effective date for the settlement has not yet been formally announced. If no appeal is filed, it could arrive around Nov. 12, based on the settlement terms and the appeal timeline. Once that date passes, payments must be sent electronically or by check within 60 days, which could place distribution in January 2027. Any appeal could delay the process further.
The court said the administrator had received 4,918,073 claims by Aug. 24, 2026. Of those, 3,924,153 were approved in the three tier categories, while 1,099,732 were denied for reasons such as being late, duplicate, fraudulent, withdrawn or otherwise ineligible. The court also noted that some totals could still change as deficient claims are resolved.
The claim deadline has already passed, so the filing window is closed. People who previously submitted claims can still check for updates or request their Class Member ID through the official settlement website or by calling the administrator at 833-890-4930. The site says payments will not begin until the appeals period ends and all claims have been reviewed.
