Ashwagandha capsules are being recalled because they may be contaminated with salmonella.

Vitality Works, a New Mexico-based company, has recalled one lot of 120-count 365 Whole Foods Market Standardized and Full Spectrum Blend Ashwagandha capsules sold nationwide, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The product was sold at Whole Foods Market stores and through Amazon.com.

The recalled capsules carry an expiration date of Oct. 13, 2028, and lot number 2025-26227.

No illnesses linked to the recall had been reported at the time of the FDA notice.

What is Salmonella

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause a gastrointestinal illness known as salmonellosis, one of the most common foodborne diseases. It can spread through contaminated surfaces, utensils or food handlers who do not wash their hands.

Pets can also spread the bacteria in the home if they eat infected food.

The FDA has reported 345 total cases nationwide, with Kentucky confirming at least one case.

Past salmonella outbreaks have been connected to meat, poultry, dairy products, fruits, leafy greens, raw sprouts, fresh vegetables, nut butters, pet food, pet treats and undercooked or raw eggs or dough.

What you can do

The FDA advises consumers to throw away any recalled product.

To reduce the risk of salmonella in the home, the agency recommends cleaning surfaces that may have touched contaminated items, including countertops, cutting boards and the inside of the refrigerator.

After cleaning possibly affected areas, wash your hands well with warm water and soap.
