Roydon Cerejo / Android Authority
Add Android Authority on Google:
TL;DR
- Google is working on a hands-free Emergency SOS trigger for Android devices.
- Clues about the feature were found in Google’s Personal Safety app code.
- Based on an animation, the feature may activate when a user says “Help” three times.
Google’s Personal Safety app is a handy tool that can share a user’s location with trusted contacts, warn about severe weather, and sound an alarm through Emergency SOS. On Pixel phones and watches, it also powers tools such as Fall Detection and Crash Detection.
At present, starting an Emergency SOS on many Android devices, especially non-Pixel models, usually requires pressing the power button five times. Google now appears to be exploring another option that would let people trigger it without touching the phone.

Google may be preparing a voice-based safety tool that can send an SOS and contact first responders during an emergency without requiring any button press. We found new references to the feature in the code for Google’s Personal Safety app in build version 2026.09.16.982745548. As of now, it is not available to users.
Code
<code><string name="add_hh_way_to_start">Add hands-free way to start</string> <string name="demo_voice_cancel_desc_text">Say “cancel” to dismiss Emergency SOS</string> <string name="demo_voice_touch_and_hold_title_text">Say “yes” to continue</string></code>The strings also suggest the feature may ask for spoken confirmation, such as saying yes to continue or cancel to dismiss the SOS.
Because Personal Safety is not limited to Pixel devices, the feature could arrive on many supported Android phones from other manufacturers as well, though Samsung is excluded since it offers its own SOS tools. In addition to the strings above, we also found an animation that likely points to voice-triggered SOS support. It shows SOS features such as location check, emergency video recording, and emergency calling being activated when someone says “Help” three times. The animation is likely intended to appear during setup.
While the idea is clearly useful, Google ideally should also offer a way to call emergency services without any confirmation step. A confirmation prompt may reduce false activations, but it could also prevent users from getting help in situations where they cannot respond.
Since the feature is still in development, there is a chance Google could change that behavior and add an option to skip verification. We’ll keep you posted if Google updates the feature or expands its rollout.
⚠️ An APK teardown helps predict features that may arrive on a service in the future based on work-in-progress code. However, such predicted features may not make it to a public release.
