Digital banking has changed the way many people manage money, and Ally Bank is one of the better-known names in the space. As an online-only institution, it offers both tradeoffs and advantages compared with traditional branch banking.
Based in Detroit, Ally Bank provides a wide selection of financial products, including checking accounts, savings accounts, certificates of deposit and credit cards. Because it operates without a large branch network, its overhead is generally lower, which helps support competitive yields on savings products and CDs.
Below, we take a closer look at Ally Bank to help you decide whether it fits your banking needs.

Who is Ally Bank good for?
Ally Bank can cover most everyday banking needs, with products ranging from deposit accounts to credit cards, investments, retirement accounts and auto loans. It may be a strong fit for someone who wants to keep most or all of their money at one institution.
It is also appealing for people who want straightforward, no-fee accounts with competitive returns.
Who shouldn’t use Ally Bank?
Because Ally is an online-only bank, it does not have branches. Cash deposits are possible at local Walmart locations, but customers who prefer face-to-face banking may find that limiting.
That said, Ally provides access to more than 75,000 free ATMs and offers 24/7 phone support. Customers can also use online chat through the bank’s website.
Ally does not offer mortgages or personal loans. Its personal lending business was acquired by Synchrony in 2024, so borrowers needing those products will need to look elsewhere.
Ally Bank rates and products
Ally offers several deposit products, including checking, savings, money market accounts and CDs with different term lengths. Most of its rates are competitive, though the checking account yield is modest. Here is a closer look at the bank’s offerings.
Checking accounts
Ally’s free checking product is called the Spending Account. There are no service charges or minimum balance requirements, and the APY depends on the size of your balance. Balances under $15,000 earn 0.10% APY, while balances of $15,000 or more earn 0.25%.
The account comes with a debit card, access to more than 75,000 free ATMs, and reimbursement of up to $10 per statement cycle for fees charged by other ATMs nationwide.

The bank offers three CD types: standard High Yield CDs, Raise Your Rate CDs and No Penalty CDs. Each is also available as an IRA CD.
The Raise Your Rate CD lets savers increase their rate once during a two-year term or twice over a two-year term. For all CDs except the No Penalty version, early withdrawal penalties range from 30 to 150 days of interest depending on the term.
