Aging water heater with a $175 repair estimate prompts debate over repair versus replacement

A homeowner who was quoted $175 for a water heater repair asked Reddit for guidance and was offered a possibly cheaper fix.

The conversation also raised a larger question: whether it made sense to keep repairing a tank that had been in service since 2006.

What happened

The post said the estimate covered new fittings at both the inlet and outlet of the water heater. After the homeowner shared the issue with the r/askaplumber community, commenters pointed to visible corrosion around what they identified as the cold-side dielectric union.

“Unfortunately, I can’t afford to replace the entire system right now,” the homeowner wrote, adding that the tank otherwise appeared to be working normally.

Several inexpensive options were suggested right away. One commenter said the union nut might simply need tightening, while another recommended cleaning the connection and changing the gasket.

Homeowners considering a full replacement down the road may also find that a heat pump water heater can reduce energy costs.

More context

Beyond the expense, the homeowner wanted to know whether replacing the unions could affect the rest of the aging tank.

One commenter warned that debris could clog faucet aerators or cartridges once the water was turned back on. That same commenter said the union replacement would not necessarily damage the tank.

The homeowner said they had noticed moisture in the brownish area. Another commenter said the dampness appeared to be coming from the union seam and argued the buildup looked more like hard-water deposits than corrosion.

Some readers advised replacing the roughly 20-year-old heater entirely. Others said $175 was reasonable for a service visit and pushed back on claims that the proposed repair was pointless.

What are the options?

The original poster said they were open to tightening the nuts.

One commenter suggested a different repair approach that would cost about $100 in materials and tool rental. The homeowner also said they were considering that route. The same commenter who offered the alternative repair named Rheem, A.O. Smith, and Bradford White as possible brands to consider if a replacement becomes necessary.

“Twenty years is a long time for a heater. I’d recommend starting to set some money aside for this when you can,” they added.

For a future upgrade, Cala sells smart heat pump water heaters. Its customizable systems are designed to help homeowners lower energy bills by heating water only when needed. Cala also offers a replacement option separate from the question of whether this tank’s connection needs repair.

The homeowner did not later say which option they chose.
