The Ramsey Show hosts Jade Warshaw and George Kamel spoke with a caller named Michael, who said he was at peace even after losing his $120,000 agricultural sales job.
Michael, from Raleigh, N.C., explained that he and his wife had spent 11 years working toward full financial freedom. Along the way, they became debt-free and paid off their $450,000 home, while also building savings for their son’s college expenses and setting aside money in investments.
Despite the setback, Michael said the part that surprised him most was how calm he felt about the situation. He told the hosts that he had lost his job as a traveling salesman for agricultural chemicals just as the family was reaching major financial milestones.
He said he called the show to ask whether now would be a good time to move into a different career path. Michael said he has long been interested in health care and would like to do work that offers “hope and healing” to others, even though starting pay in the field would likely be much lower.
Michael said he was considering a lab technician role and admitted it would take time before he could earn more in that field. He also said he has personal interest in health and wants a career that helps people.
Warshaw and Kamel said Michael and his wife had already built a strong financial cushion by living on roughly half of his salary for years. Because of that, they said, taking a lower-paying job would not necessarily put the family in a difficult position.
“The good news is you’ve set yourself up beautifully. I mean, you have no debt. Your home is paid off,” Warshaw said. Kamel added that Michael appeared to have enough room in the family budget to cover bills, retirement savings, college costs, vacations, and even a car upgrade while working in a new field.
Michael said he would be living off his severance package while looking for a lab tech position, and he said he felt that the decision was leading him in the direction he was meant to go. He also noted that the move would give him more time with his son.
Kamel encouraged him to pursue the change, saying Michael still had time and flexibility on his side and could likely earn a strong income again in the future.
